My inlaws are from St. Louis. They speak weird up there. The first time I met her, she had finished making dinner and asked me if I wanted ta "fark". I said, "Excuse me?". She said, "Do you wanna fark?"
I looked at my wife and then my father inlaw dumbfounded for a moment, and then it hit me.
"Oh, you asked me if I wanted a fork (uneasy laughter). Yes. Yes please. Sorry. I misunderstood you (uneasy laughter)."

That affects the culture, speech, food, entertainment - everything. The academic and medical communities, and the artsy types, like to think it's more cosmopolitan than is really is.
Well, now.

As I mention above my family is all from Washington MO (parents were high school sweethearts there) but I myself am Columbia MO born and raised. I know the community to its core rather than just as a place to go to college. I definitely didn't feel we were more cosmopolitan than much of anything other than surrounding Boone County but that's not exactly saying much. I will say though the main result of being such a heavily influenced by local colleges town is the trickle down to the public school system there which is outstanding. I was one of three kids from my same CoMo elementary school class who went to Vandy, another went to Northwestern and another went Ivy League...its just a smart town by any standard not just compared to other areas of MO.
As for the rest...culture-wise its straight up college town. Has more in common with Austin and Champaigne IL and (barf) Lawrence KS than it does with Sikeston or Sprangfield or St.Joseph or KC or STL, of that there is no doubt.
Speech patterns I don't think are recognizable there as far as us natives. Every person I've met from every different part of the country, when I ask them they all say I don't really seem to have any sort of recognizable accent of any kind, just very neutral and bland. Which is different from the Warshington/Hermann Eastern MO accents that we mention above, growing up in CoMo I never spoke that way.
The food/entertainment stuff is a really recent trend since I've left. Growing up there in the 1980s and 90s the most notable thing really was the lack of any of those types of things that you could call truly unique to CoMo, aside from the really ancient stalwarts like the Blue Note, Shakespeare's, Booches, Harpo's and the like. But this modern trend in the 2000s to "Discover the District" and all this crap both cracks me up and makes me jealous. I see a place like Bleu and other all trying-to-be-swanky type joints and it's like where the hell was this when I was growing up there. In my day it was utterly thrilling when we got our first Steak N' Shake and Imo's. Oh and when the first Applebees came to CoMo? Oh man we were BIG TIME!

Oh well, I could talk about this forever probably but I will slow my (throwed) roll and shut up for a second.

Given the STD rate in the Lou, I would advise that the correct response is either "No" or "yeah but lemme wrap it up first".
Ah, St.Louis - where bringing your spouse a warm Stag beer is punishable by a gun shot wound to the head.

No. We're posers if we do.
I lived in San Diego for a while. I can tell you with certainty that the biggest poser douchebags all come from Cali. Southern Cali is the fakest place in the US.

I'll use "ya'll" as much as I want to, aint no poser, born and raised in Mizzou. Who made you the end all know all on Missouri culture?
I aint try'n to fit in anywhere, I use Ya'll some of the time not all the time, plus a majority of both sides of my family are from the south, thats why my moms tea was the hit of the neighborhood grow'n up, it was the only sweet tea around, and I don't mean slightlty sweet like they serve up here, I'm talki'n real sweet tea. Don't eat grits though.
I was born and raised in Missouri, an I don't need you to give me no pass cause you can stick your comments staight up your arse.

“I come from a country that raises corn and cotton, cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I'm from Missouri, and you have got to show me.”

I think it's a damn stupid word, but to say nobody in MO says it is ridiculous.

Who gives a shite? It's not like using the word "ya'll" and talking like your straight up out of forrest gump is a requirement to join the SEC

Kills: we call those DB's bro's or flatbrimmers out here. They seem to have $30k lift kits on their F150's comical.

I had a boss that transferred from MO that I thought was a yankee until we started talking college football. never said y'all or dayumn or any of that good shiet.

My mom was born and raised up to her teenage years in Bentonville, Ark. I say y'all most of the time as I got it from her growing up myself. Most people that first meet me think I was raised in the south because I have a bit of the southern accent. Again, I got it from my mom. I was born and raised in KCMO...never lived anywhere else in my life.

Y'all is the only thing that makes sense. Saying " you guys" to a bunch of girls is more than stupid.

Well, I'm certainly glad I could start a serious social and cultural discussion on SECR today. Seems like I've offended some MO folks more than others. Again, y'all need to chill. But seriously folks, carry on with the show...

No one from MO says it. Not even in Southern MO. Don't try and act like we're suddenly southern because we joined the SEC.
Who would claim to be a Mizz fan and not actually be one? Oh alters!
