I do think it’s obvious that it’s easier to achieve nowadays because we play so many more games. A national title winning team has been playing 15 games the past few years compared to like 10-11 back in the old days.


That and playing #9 in a bowl game and then winning means they drop out of the top 10. Bowl games, during the Bryant era, were likely your only shot at an extra top 10 team.

There was also a bit more bias in the polls back then for northern and western teams.

The 10 game schedule has already been mentioned, but it's also true that the SEC wasn't the killer conference then as it is now. Maybe one or 2 really good teams in a given year but not like it is now.
