College football has to be, to some extent, a meritocracy. OM is better on paper than a lot of teams who got in but certainly did not deserve a bid, and it would've been a joke to give them one.

This is the correct take. OM took SC to the woodshed in their own house with some of OM’s best players out from injury. Even then OM didn’t play to their potential.
