Thats amazing. Do a lot of students live in that area? Man so many HUGE trees just ripped away.
The street behind the Chevron (Cedar Crest neighborhood) has a lot of houses that students rent I know for sure because I used to have friends that lived back there when I was in college.

Yeah I'd say it's mostly students. There are a couple houses here and there that people have lived in for years with their families, but for the most part that section is all students. When you get to the road that comes down from the hospital (6th avenue) and go across it to the other neighborhood, I believe those are primarily families.

Good God. That area was obliterated. Such a sad deal. I live back in Fayetteville and its both my home now and where I went to college. So many memories tied to this place, I just can't imagine it being destroyed like that.

That is correct. The houses on the other side of 6th are primarily families. I blew the picture up, and you can see a red car infront of my house. The kid I lived with had a red tahoe. Pretty sure its his.

Yikes. BTW, how much of Midtown Village was destroyed? I keep seeing pictures of the same intersection at McFarland and 15th Street but haven't seen any pictures of Midtown Village of the area closer to McFarland and Hargove Road intersection. I interned at the Kelly Services office directly behind the Chick Fila drive thru and Olive Garden while in school. Did those offices get taken out? What about Bruno's and the University Mall?

Those are alright.

Bruno's is good. University sustained damages on the Belk side.

Midtown might have suffered minor damage. I know Five Guys Burgers and Fries had a table through the front windows. Other than that I don't think anything too bad, I could be wrong though.

I'm hoping that maybe they went to the Aunt's parents
Do they live in the same area?
IIRC, They live either close to the TN border or just inside TN.

I am on my way to a donation center here in Florence to drop off items that they are distributing all throughout the state. Wish I could do more, but every little thing helps. Prayers to all affected.

I got bad info from my brother then. He said Bruno's got hit hard. Good to hear the University Mall was mostly spared.

Hopefully that's correct. The results could have been even more horrendous if the tornado had veered a bit south and go on a line hitting Midtown Village, Bruno's, and University Mall head on. It would have likely taken out the Target behind University Mall as well if it had taken that path. The death toll has been horrible enough already. Could you imagine how much more loss of life that would have caused.

The death toll has risen to 318 across 7 states and 228 in Alabama. Amazingly, the Super Outbreak of April 1974 death toll of 315 has been surpassed.

I hope the number doesn't rise much higher.

NYCAuburn has put together a great list of relief effort contacts here.

From Dr. Witt, President of the University:
quote:
To the UA Family:
The University of Alabama expresses its deepest sympathies to those in the Tuscaloosa community who have lost loved ones. We especially mourn the loss of members of the UA family. We recognize and appreciate the efforts of the first responders and everyone who has worked so tirelessly to provide aid and assistance to those impacted by the storm. The University will continue to partner with the city and county of Tuscaloosa, as we work together to meet the immediate needs of our students, faculty and staff, as well as our friends and neighbors in the community.
I encourage you to continue to reach out to your colleagues and co-workers who have suffered damage from the storm. Your generosity and acts of kindness are so typical of the UA spirit, and I am proud of the way you have responded to this crisis situation. We will continue to move forward as a family.
Many of you have asked for additional ways you can help. Contributions to the UA Acts of Kindness Fund will be used to help UA students, faculty and staff who need assistance as a result of storm damage. The University will continue to provide resources as additional needs become known.
Please know that Sandee and I are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.
Robert Witt

Bama fans, Tuscaloosa residents: no love lost on the fields of athletic competition between two GREAT institutions: LSU, and the University of Alabama. However, all of you are in our thoughts and prayers. Roll Tide, Tiger Jeff

Saw this on a girl's facebook status

quote:
All people in Tuscaloosa- If a crying child comes to you and says they need help or to be taken home, inform the nearest official and take them directly to the police station, NOT the address they give. A gang, MS-13, is currently using this to lure women to various addresses in order to rape/assault them. Spread the word-- From the UA Women's Resource Center director.

I sincerely hope that's not true.
