Rivals continues the positional rankings

quote:

10. LSU
BUZZ: Four starters are back, and though no Tigers linemen are going to contend for All-America honors, this nevertheless is a solid - and physical - unit. Consider that LSU rushed for 185.7 yards per game last season despite an inept passing attack, and you realize these guys can shove some folks around.

quote:

1. ALABAMA
BUZZ: This reminds us a lot of the 2009 Alabama offensive line, which had four returning starters but needed a new guy to step in at left tackle as they blocked for a new starting tailback. Well, this season's Alabama line has four returning starters but needs a new guy to step in at left tackle as they block for a new starting tailback. In '09, remember, that new tailback (Mark Ingram) won the Heisman and the Tide on the national title. Junior G Barrett Jones is one of the three or four best players in the nation at his position, and C William Vlachos and T D.J. Fluker will contend for All-SEC honors. This is a big, physical group.

No surprises here

I'm not sold on Alabama having the best Offensive line in the nation. That said, if we aren't one of the best we are in for a looong season.

DUDE!!!

You are having a stroke. Call 911!!!!

ETA: No. I do not think the LSU OL has underachieved. In fact, without them, there is NO WAY LSU wins 11 games last season....especially with that anemic passing game. Folks loaded the box and LSU still had the All SEC RB.

2 of our weakest areas last year, OL & DB, will be strong points this year. 12-0, bank it.

While I can appreciate your faith and enthusiasm, I disagree. We have a very weak passing game. Julio was often double teamed and he could keep corner-backs and safteys honest. Without a game changer like him, they will stack up heavy against the run. We won't go undefeated unless a superstar wide receiver steps up. Nobody is talking about the kicking game. I think this alone will cost us a game.

Bama has 12 4-star WR's on their roster. Coaching was a problem and we solved that.

Both LSU and Bama return 4 starters and backups with plenty of experience

Last year LSU gave up 24 sacks.. Bama gave up 32

LSU was also better running the football despite having one of the worst passing offenses in the NCAA and opponents not respecting the pass

Point being, LSU OL > Bama OL

I don't think its deserved really. We should have a good line but they were a disappointment last year so just going off that I wouldn't rank us number 1 (of course I have no idea who has the best line in the country, I'm just a bit surprised its us).

There were some injuries last year and it should be better this year. It has to be if we win the BCS again.

I'll be honest here.

They need to improve quite a bit from last year in order to be considered the best in the nation.

Quite a bit of their struggles last year can be attributed to injuries. I don't think they started the same 5 all year and I know were missing key guys against LSU and Auburn.

I get all the Bama hype but that o-line did very little to protect the QB against LSU last year. We were hitting him all day long.

Teams do not have to have a "superstar" wide receiver to go undefeated. AU did not have a superstar wide receiver last year. Teams stacked up to stop the run against them. Didn't matter.

If a safety walks up in the box to stop the run against Bama leaving eight in the box and single coverage everywhere else then that would be a mistake. Maze has the wheels to get deep on most anyone, Hanks has good hands and is good in the intermediate routes, and we can assume that the 3rd WR will be someone of decent size. Size usually wins 1x1 battles.

This doomsday scenario you pose doesn't take into account adjustments that an O might make based on personnel and defensive schemes. While I think it is a stretch to say Bama goes 12-0, I do not think it is a stretch to say that a 4th straight 10 win season is highly likely.

Swamptider

Would you like to make a bet on that 12-0 season?
I know nothing is never certain but you are bring 2 young and unexpirienced qb's to the table, with your star wr gone. Not to mention you best Rb is gone and if Richardson gets banged up or hurt, your depth there is solid but no game changers. On top of that, ppl will load the box on you guys until the qb can keep them honest.

Your strength will be defense but take it from a Tiger fan who knows something about really good defenses and not so great qb play.... your defense will weaken by the 2nd half of the season.

They started 3 Freshman on the OL vs. the barn. The only time we were healthy all year was the Bowl game, and it showed.
