I am sure he has spoken with his client and been instructued simply to find out what the deal is....after the tourney is over for him, they will sit down and look at it.

We wouldn't be waiting on him to finish his season if we knew there wasn't at least some interest from him.

It's not unethical. That's what agents do. The client signs over a limited power of attorney.

Now some coaches may have a back-and-forth during the negotiation but most don't. You could give very simple instructions "I don't care where I go just get me the most money" or "I want to stay at Wichita but get me a raise" etc etc just simple examples

Maybe we don't get Marshall. I'm not going to sit here and pretend that I know the future. But Alabama is obviously turning heads with the amount of money we are willing to pay. That is bound to get some good coaches interested, possibly names that haven't even been mentioned yet..

No, we aren't. We are hopeful that it could happen but no one thinks it's a sure thing or even likely. That's just the mantra being thrown around so that when Marshall does turn down the offer, it'll be stated to troll even more.

I think the 4.5 mil number is ridiculous. We should offer the guy 3.5 tops, and if he gets a raise from WSU out of it, good for him. Move on to Archie Miller or someone like him. Marshall is not the only good coach out there.

I'm more in a "man that would be awesome" mode.

I haven't seen any of us saying it's going to happen, just that it's at least possible. But that won't stop the BS trolls if/ when he doesn't come.

Yeah, it's not like we constantly finish in the top half of the conference in attendance.

This is sad... You should be ashamed.

No. We are getting whipped into a "we are making a big play for a very good coach and that shows we are finally serious about being a top tier basketball program" frenzy. Most think the odds are still against Bama landing him, but are pleased that the AD is not starting at B or C level candidates. Give him life changing money in his offer and make him say no. Good for Bama.

Role of an agent at this stage:
1) determine the interest level of potential suitor(s)
2) determine starting point of negotiations so as to not waste client's time (you don't really think these deals get worked out in 24 hours, do you?)
3) communicate all the "must do/have" items that your client has shared with you in the past in order for him to consider a move
4) get firm agreement on the "must do/have" items.
5) to have an offer ready to show his client at the point his client is ready

Bama is desperate to make a huge hire... They can deny and deflect all they want but reality is the Pearl hire has forced their hand to throw out huge dollar amounts...

desperate is the wrong word. Committed is the better word. Bama is committed to making a huge hire.

Any time your conference gets better coaching you have to re-evaluate your own situation, but to make this about Pearl is stupid. If Grant had made the tourney this year he would still be the coach at Bama. The reason Bama is throwing out huge dollar amounts is because they are tired of having an average basketball program when there is considerable evidence (see 6 sweet 16s in 11 years) that they are capable of more.

+1

I feel exactly the same way. Marshall is a good coach but he hasn't reached a level that justifies Izzo/Donovan/Self/Cal/Pitino salary.

Desperately committed to upping the ante in a sport other than football. As an alum, I'm happy to see UA focus their attention on basketball and back it up with big money if that's what it takes.

The entire conference is getting better and Anthony Grant wasn't meeting expectations. You of all people should know what has to happen when expectations aren't met in a sport. shite, y'all have damn near a half a dozen men you're paying not to coach at Auburn right now.

Bama fans know this to be true..if Pearl isn't hired at AU, more than likely grant stays 1-2 more years... The fact that AU made a huge hire forced Bill Battle's hand.. Now he will throw ton of cash out there to someone who will only come to Bama brcause of the money..

I guess that would be better than going to some shithole just to say you have a job. Or was that the great Auburn hoops tradition that convinced Pearl it was the right choice?
