Yes and no. The portal took a lot of the Saban roster off the bat. It’s a pretty large percentage of the roster that DeBoer has brought in.

Yet, four of the five best players on the team are Deboer's recruits. Recruiting hasn't skipped a beat (unless you think the same star players Deboer is recruiting are players Saban would pass over). Deboer also inherited a team that lost 40+ players to the draft/portal.

Without Saban's recruit at QB what is Bama's record right now? 4-3?

Ty got one start under Saban against a mid team and was pure trash. We can credit his development to Deboer and Russell appears to be a stud as well.

can he develop a competent QB?

He turned Jake Haener into one of the most efficient QBs in the nation and a spotty Michael Penix into a Heisman contender.

Jury is still out on Deboer. He had a very short run at UW and was coaching players he didn't recruit. Similarly at Bama, he is still coaching Saban recruits. We don't know how he will fare with his own recruits, can he develop a competent QB? Without Saban's recruit at QB what is Bama's record right now? 4-3?

Alabama's best/most clutch player is a DeBoer guy, Germie Bernard. DeBoer is 19-3 against top 25 opponents. That's no fluke with that amount of games. He took over a 4 win team at Washington and won 11 games in his first season and then took them to a national championship in his second season. He's not perfect of course. He has his flaws (struggling with unranked teams), but he's easily one of the top 5 coaches in the country.

There's questions about almost every coach. Time will tell if Deboer improves on getting his teams ready for weaker opponents or adjusts when his top staff members move to HC jobs.

However, developing a QB would seem one of the last questions about Deboer.

Simpson was nowhere near the QB he is now, even last year. Also consider Penix and Deboer has as good a track record as one can of not just developing competent QBs but also turning competent ones into Heisman contenders.

I'll let you in on a little secret. He's going to do better once the team is made up of his recruits.

Some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers. If only Hugh had said no!
