That's an African elephant. Tigers are not native to the savannas of Africa. And they DO occasionally take adult Indian elephants as prey (though not often--you can eat 'em, but they taste like shite).

That's actually pretty cool.
You won this round Bama!

That was back when Cherokee had cool animal cages where you dropped in a nickel and a duck would play the piano or a chicken would peck drums. Ah the good ole days of awesome animal tricks and no PETA.

The Dekes at UA have had live elephants at their house...although I don't think they have since the house was moved.

Oh, how disappointing.
I thought it was going to be a Crimson Tide.

They wanted us to get a Robot tiger.... That tiger lives better than most of those fart sniffers, I bet his house costs more as well
How many tigers get a 3 million dollar habitat?

yeah... umm...
The Elephants in India and Thialand are considered precious and an important part of their cultures. To them Elephants are quite expensive and can cost "at least" $10,000.oo US dollars. An African Elephant, and only females are workable (bulls are far too aggressive) are probably financially beyond reach. (We are talking million dollar animal, b/c of their endangered status)
As a private individual in the USA, you cannot buy an Elephant. They are far, far too hard to take care of in captivity to warrant private ownership.
Also to boot, LSUs Vet School (one of the best in the nation) is on Campus and Dr. Baker (Mike's personal M.D.) and 2 vet students take care of him year round. However, all of the money to take care of Mike comes from the Athletic Department.
So you see it would be a very difficult, 7-10 year process for Bama to get a live Elephant mascot again. Also the Enclosure for the Elephant would have to be quite substantial.

I have had a personal tour of that place.... pretty damn nice. Didn't know they had an underwater treadmill for Animals too.
I LOVED the wildlife rehabilitation part too. MY family is greatly involved in all that. One time I came home for a weekend and there was a Red tail hawk in my room.... I was like WTF?

I see them every night while eating, walking with kids on the streets. The kids are selling food so you can feed the elephants. There is an abundance of elephants here, especially in the north. I doubt it would be cost prohibitive to get one.

Yeah, we had three at the old DKE house in like '04. Big ol' bastards with tusks, and the whole nine yards.
The kids and families walking into the stadium got a kick out of it. They got pictures taken and got to pet them.
If a bunch of slap dicks could make it work perfectly one weekend, I see no reason why the university couldn't.

Sounds like the football team.
I don't see any reason to purchase one when you can borrow one from the zoo for a couple of home games a year.

Nama should get a live bear in a houndstooth hat to walk the sideline. Then ole miss could get one dressed in a seersucker suit and they could fight it out for the claim to "the bear."

Maybe the fact that they lost to Auburn that day is the reason they haven't had one since.
Upon further research, the elephant died. It was a pygmy elephant and the people who donated it, didn't take all that much care of it.
