This. Saban typically puts together the best recruiting class in the country, but that isn't always a given.
This whole thing was a great big PR fail.
Maurice Smith was a contributor. If I were a recruit I'd wonder why the frick a guy would want to leave a place where he's received some of the best coaching in college? Why leave one of the perennial top defenses and National Championship contenders?

The lesson learned:
Whine a lot until you get your way.
Make sure the whining is public.

Seems odd considering Saban's response to HUNH, don't you think?
And satellite camps...etc

Honest to goodness, I'm not sure some of them think before they post. Not necessarily aimed at Alabama posters, but a lot of people on this site...

I'm just glad this is over. The situation sucked, I think Saban walked into bad PR but I think he had a point. I feel bad for Smith because he was a good kid here who worked hard and things just blew up.
Hopefully he goes to Georgia, gets to play, does it well and gets a shot in the NFL.

Ask Bowing Green how they feel when your coach "poached" their player.
When did Bowling Green join the SEC?

1. Get asked question by media (a lot) about your position on a particular topic
2. Give straight forward answer explaining your position. Provide various points that support your position, most of which (not all) are very valid.
3. Be told you're whining
4. Other coach(es) take to twitter to complain about your position.
5. Other twitter coaches regarded as "righteous" eventhough nobody really asked for their opinion anyways.
6. Get told you're "feuding" with twitter coaches eventhough you've never addressed them in any way at all really.
7. Win championship despite all this anyways.
8. Profit ???

I am too. It was just a bad situation all the way around. With the decline of the newspaper, and with huge competition on the internet, the media is quickly devolving into starting a controversy where there is none. Saban was perfectly within his rights to deny a waiver. I honestly believe the media is bent on shaping opinion and forcing its will on the entire country.

And now asshats like Jeff Schultz, who has spend 2 weeks calling Saban an a-hole, responds by pointing and laughing at Saban for "surrendering".
You seriously can't win with some of these people.

It is amazing how many people discuss this and don't even know the very basic facts.

Its just that no coach can ever win in this situation. I honestly blame the SEC who should have put the onus on themselves to grant the transfer for grad students. No coach is ever going to look good denying a kid a xfer.

The Smith's chose to take this thing public. They got what they wanted from UA, now let's see how much public pressure they can put on Greg Sankey to get the waiver approved.
Time is of the essence, classes start next week, right? Has Smith enrolled at UGA even without SEC clearance to play?

Not sure what this was all about or the point of your post...
Saban has been known for offering his opinion on a lot of subjects. he doesn't have to be asked. He complains a lot. I have no problem with that. he can express his opinion. More power to him.
I just find it odd that you and some other Alabama posters are quick to condemn a kid for complaining about a perceived wrong when Saban does the same thing a pretty fair amount himself.

Does it matter? You are condemning a kid for complaining. Calling him names. Saban complains a lot, too. What difference does it make if he is asked or not. Plenty of coaches are asked questions in which they could complain but are more diplomatic. I have no problem with Saban expressing his opinion. Why would you have a problem with a kid doing the same?

I have no idea. Lots of kids enroll at schools and never attend there. What's your point and maybe I can answer better.

I agree. Look what Kirby Smart went through with the Turman episode. I lay blame on this whole thing on the media. they tend to blow everything out of proportion.
I honestly do not think Saban was wrong in denying the request. I also don't think the kid was wrong is asking for it....and, if he did not get the results he wanted, I find it difficult to blame him for doing whatever he felt necessary to get his waiver. We all go to extremes sometimes to sway public opinion to our side of an argument. Especially in sports.

Saban will be criticized, critiqued, analyzed, scrutinized, evaluated, and examined until the day the hangs up his panama hat. It's the price you pay when college football spectators/enthusiasts are forced to watch his teams hoist the hardware on pace never before witnessed.

I absolutely HATE the media.

Schultz is such a weasel, too. He trashes everything (Braves front office, Saban, Budenholzer) except for Mark Richt and the Falcons.
He's really one of the most arrogant fools I've ever read, and that is saying something.

Except he didn't - he complained, and when nothing changed, he adapted. HUNH is still here. Sat. camps are still here.
He didn't go on and on and on using social media.
I swear, some people on here don't think before they post.
