Beat on the field by the other co-champion...yet still insist they were the national champions.

Sorry, but back then trophies were awarded prior to bowl games.
It is the way it was.

Well UPI named them as the national champion, cannot blame them for that. Blame UPI if someone needs to be blamed. Then again, Coach Bryant could have taken the easier road and played in the Orange Bowl, but instead chose to take on #3 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl.

They lost to the other co-champion.
Any reasonable person knows who the real champion was in 1973. It was Notre Dame.
Same with 1978. USC was the real champion.

Unsure why people get upset if a school claims championships or not. It is just fill, does not really make a whole lot of difference in the world. I mean, really at the end of the day in 2016, does it really matter who won the NCAA football championship in 1973?
The game does provide good memories for fans on both sides, which is all it should do anyway, right? It is entertainment, nothing more, nothing less.

Why would you want to claim a championship that is not yours? It is hollow.
What makes one school try to take undeserved glory from another?

Sorry UPI awarded it to Bama prior to the Bowl games.
Until the crowning was delayed until after Bowl season, many considered Bowl games exhibition games and they often weren't taken as seriously.

Well, now you are asking a question I cannot answer.
Almost like the guy who stands before a crowd of people and proclaims that his wife is the most beautiful woman on earth, when everyone in the room knows she is butt arse ugly.

Yes, but we know who the real champion was in 1973.
The better team that won on the field.

The real champion is the one with the trophy in the case.

You mean the Sugar Bowl trophy?
The one where the co-champions met on the field and the champion won?
I agree.
Congrats to Notre Dame on the 1973 championship.

Y'all claim 1940, 1951, and 1967 despite losing your bowl (s) (and 40 and 67 weren't AP or UPI). You suck at this.

Bless your little hearts, quite a few teams did not play bowl games until the 1970s especially Notre Dame. Bowl games were regarded as exhibitions.
Little trolls on an obscure chat board can say whatever snarky thing comes to teenage mind but there are truths in the world. Two of them are:
1. Alabama was UPI National Champion for 1972;
2.Tennesse and LSU were not anything important that year except as another easy W for Alabama.
Come to think of it, that was the sole purpose of those teams the entire decade. Dam, it's still true today..and they say history doesn't repeat itself LOL

Just made up for 1966..Bama and Ken Stabler were robbed by Play for the Tie Parseghian and politics.

Why should Alabama not claim the 1973 national championship when one of the two major polls voted them national champions in 1973?
I have never understood the argument to the contrary.
