Look for the 1934 team picture. If I'm not mistaken, he is wearing #12 in that

Yeah pretty sure bryant wasn't number 21. number 12 looks like him though.

IIRC, some young production turd who sets up ESPN's Gameday sets is a Bama alum (they talked about it after the '09 title game), and he is the one who set the 13 and 14 after the title wins. He probably doesn't even realize "12" didn't necessarily mean the national titles.

how old are the folks here, though? I'm 29 so for most of my life, 12 was IT. From 92 to 09 it was 12. They made t shirts, "Got 12?" Maybe it's still lingering in some people's minds

I'm 30, so yeah, I feel the same. But helmets on TV were usually the year up until 2000

That is so sweet. LSU and the number 11 is because when I was being measured for my first porn movie, the tape measure was stretched to 11 inches. The 12 is all because of you and the 11 is all because of me....go figure huh?

Bear Bryant and Don Hutson

Coach Bryant became a 6-time national champion coach; and is in the College HOF. And Don Hutson is an All-American; and is in both the College HOF and Pro HOF.

The 12 meant national titles. It changed to 13 after we beat Texas in 09. Our official logo has now changed to the helmet with14 on it. You are starting to see stuff with the 14 now.
If I were vendors I wouldn't stockpile a huge amount of stuff with 14 on it. With the classes Coach Saban is signing it isn't likely to stay 14 very long.

Especially since the whole 12,13,14 is a bunch of over inflated crap

9 now is more accurate

I am not even going to explain how we don't claim the number that some researchers give us.

On second thought, I will.

The NCAA lists Alabama as receiving a championship for the 1945, 1966, 1975, and 1977 college football seasons but Alabama does not claim them, even though they have better records than some of the teams that did claim them.

We have obviously gone through this and it was between 6-8 times that bama could/should have been considered the best team in the country in a given year.

9 is at the high end, but not unreasonable. Everyone else just sorta laughs at the typical gump claims.

No, are you that insecure about Bama's football history?

You mean like 2011 or 1965

And your link is wrong Alabama did not win the AP in 1973, the AP started giving their NC after the bowls in 68 and Notre Dame won the 73 AP after beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The coaches poll UPI at the time was still giving out the NC before the bowls and had Alabama #1 after the regular season. The embarrassment of having a split title when 1 team beat the other in a bowl cause them to change.

The AP started in 1936, the coaches poll in 1950, any titles from other sources after those dates are weak and should not be counted by anyone with any kind of pride or standards.
