"One account of the mascot's derivation began in 1930, when Rosenberger's Birmingham Trunk Company, whose trademark is a red elephant standing on a trunk to signify the luggage's durability, presented red elephant good luck charms to members of Rose Bowl-bound Alabama."

Mascot is from luggage.

Two stories, dating around the same time. First, was a newspaper columnists that referred to an early 1910s Alabama team as being "large as a herd of elephants". It seemed to stick. The second is a moving company that's logo was an elephant. Said moving company provided the luggage for Alabama's 1930s treks to the Rose Bowl. Alabama is said to have adopted the logo.

The elephant is simply the only animal that can come close to representing the glory, majesty, power, wisdom and class that is The University of Alabama.

But an actual mascot wasn't allowed on the sidelines until the 1979 Sugar Bowl. Though a live minature elephant was used for Mobile games in the 1950s.

Auburn is the Auburn Tigers, yell War Eagle and are referred to as the Plainsmen.

Ole Miss is the Rebels, yell hotty toddy, have a bear for a mascot

Keep in mind, in the 1930s, to be "as big as an elephant" required you to be just a bit bigger than 5'8" 160lbs.

An actual, fully grown, elephant on the sidelines as a mascot would be pretty awesome.

Named for my wiener. It is the size of an elephant's trunk. An opposing team's fan peeked at it at the piss trough. I am a Bama fan. Rest is history.

Male elephants are trunksuckers.

quote:

African and Asian males will engage in same-sex bonding and mounting. Such encounters are often associated with affectionate interactions, such as kissing, trunk intertwining, and placing trunks in each other's mouths. Male elephants, who often live apart from the general herd, often form "companionships", consisting of an older individual and one or sometimes two younger, attendant males with sexual behavior being an important part of the social dynamic. Unlike heterosexual relations, which are always of a fleeting nature, the relationships between males may last for years. The encounters are analogous to heterosexual bouts, one male often extending his trunk along the other's back and pushing forward with his tusks to signify his intention to mount. Same-sex relations are common and frequent in both sexes, with Asiatic elephants in captivity devoting roughly 45% of sexual encounters to same-sex activity

Throughout most of Bama's history (100+ years), they've allowed their fans to run across the field during the spring's 'fan day' to get the coach's autograph. One reporter witnessing this act, mentioned they looked like a pack of 'crimson elephants'... thus, the legend was born.

I always assumed it's because elephants have tusks and the University is in Tuscaloosa. Makes sense that would be the reason, but perhaps it's just a coincidence.

I would place a solid bet that 75 percent of the Bama "fans" Have no idea what the Elephant means.
