re: Actual AD statement. Still unreal.

On one hand it's kind of refreshing to hear an AD speak about what really happened and what everyone knows really happened.
On the other hand it's not needed and may slightly rustle the next candidate.

Okay.
What am I missing? Yes, I get the Alabama-Auburn pillow fight. But Battle swung for the fences with one of the best legitimate candidates for the job. Marshall wound up declining and IMO, to his credit, Battle manned up and said they got turned down.
Should he have said "we never talked to Coach Marshall" or "this is a relief, after vetting him he wouldn't fit in?"
I wish I could give two down votes.

The point is most people say nothing after whiffing on a coaching play.

Maybe, but everything Battle said was accurate and brief.
Okay,I'm finished for the day sticking up for Alabama.

Yes. Under Newton & Sanderson we were...not elite, but good...probably before you were born though...

I upvoted. I see the Aubies are downvoting you, but this was an excellent response.

we swept Auburn this past year
you're not going to go to a post season tournament again next year

When the whiff is somewhat silent or you have plausible deniability that an offer was ever made you have the luxury of saying nothing. When your search was as public as this one was and other potential candidates already know you made the offer and they'll be (at best) your second choice, you don't cause any further harm to yourself by making a statement.

Auburn fans have multiple threads about OUR coaching search
so in the middle of you guys talking about OUR program I just wanted to remind you that we swept you in a down year that resulted in our coach being fired

I don't see anything wrong with the statement given the circumstances. The mistake was made by letting it be known that Bama was going after Marshall in the first place.

As already pointed out, there's not a dime's worth of difference between Battle's response and Moore's response after the RIchRod rejection...and we all know how that turned out. So let's just wait and see who Alabama ends up with before we throw Battle off the cliff for his statement.
