That puts the corp of cadets at less than 1% of total student body.

But... band and the corp are still the heartbeat of Texas A&M. Always was nice walking across campus early in the morning and hearing a squad running by and doing their own yells.

Not sure if they still do the Grove or not but watching Patton or Rocky beat Drago with half the corps in attendance was a blast. Wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

Judging by the amount of stadium they take up and the amount of gameday airtime they get on TV, I would have guessed the cadets are about 40% of the student body.

I love the band, I like the corps, I just think their media exposure is misrepresentative of the actual university. I didn't attend A&M, so i guess my opinion is whatever. I just think less is more.

Having worked at multiple large universities, I can tell you that Texas A&M doesn't have the clique mentality that exists at other universities; the "Aggie first" mantra (individuals before one's organization) is drilled into students from day 1. Students who don't play well with others tend to be ostracized and transfer elsewhere.

It truly is a freakishly friendly place.

Interesting. I like that.

Grove got torn down.

Correct me, but wasn't it sort of over by Cain Hall and Wellborn?

Edit: And Cain Garage that replaced Cain Dorm is great if you can get parking there for games. You drive in, walk out and you are right there starting at the zone and after the game you are off campus in 5 minutes.

We aren't about agriculture anymore either (well outside of easy classes for football players).

It is.

But it is what it is.

The Corps is way too politically powerful at A&M for the Corps Block to be broken up.

I'd like for it to happen, because I want the cameras to focus on cute girls in sundresses instead of pimple faced guys with shaved heads in khaki, but it's going to be a long time before they change that.

Yep, that's about right. It's a shame that stuff like this goes away.

That's not really true. We're not about "Now, Jimbo here's how to use a plow", but we're VERY much about genomic research and super high level crop science, which is big money.

It was between Cain and Old Main. I'm pretty sure they bulldozed at least part of it and that portion became what is now one of the pedestrian walkways that go under Wellborn.

Right, and I'm not for changing the name or mascot or any of the traditions or anything... Too many other A&M's sold out to become faceless (state name) state's with cliche mascots.

I just don't see how "we're not ag anymore" is a reason to not make a small change like how the student body is portrayed for a few hours on game day?

You'd have to understand the internal politics. The guys who were in the Corps went on to be the most loyal of our donors and the most vocal alumni. A lot of the guys who were in the Corps graduated into engineering and geosciences jobs in oil companies just as the Oil Boom happened and a lot of them are bigtime rich. Because Corps guys tend to be the most loyal to and concerned about A&M, they are by default among the biggest voices, which would be true even if a lot of the old ones didn't have a lot of oil money, which they do. They are very protective of perceived slights against the Corps or anything that might lessen the Corps' prominence. They are not afraid to make trouble or pull money if anyone touches the Corps. The Corps are like the Jews. There aren't many of them but they have a lot of money and they are loud and dedicated to their causes. Thus, we have a Holocaust museum in every city, and everyone has to read Anne Frank in school, which is total overkill. Same thing with the Corps Block. It's annoying even to our own people, but they have clout that is way, way bigger than their numbers, because it is important to them and they'll spend time campaigning for it, and the rest of us can't be bothered.

Maybe not but I can tell you that about every veterinarian office I have ever walked into has a A&M diploma in it if not 3 or 4 if they have several vets.

We do the Livestock Show & Rodeo every year and just about every student there is going to A&M.

Agriculture might not be dominant but it sure isn't shrinking. Maybe the rest of the University is growing faster than Ag but it is very strong and continues to be.

Haven't read this thread but yea I hung out with guys and girls not In the corps. We had parties and mixers just like anyone else. We obviously had put nucleus or corps buddies but once you get involved
In university activities you meet more people.

The Corps is like all other groups. Some of them suck, some of them are cool. You can say the exact same thing about Frats. I had Corps guys in my classes who were cool as hell and made them much more enjoyable. I also laughed at obese CTs falling asleep in class while standing up or being miserably awkward at life in general. Both kinds exist. It's just that Corps guys stick out more because of the uniform. Look at the general student population of any university - plenty of weirdos, it's just that they aren't grouped together by dress. I had a tranny in my rocks for jocks lab and a witch who made wire figureens during history lectures and neither of them were in the Corps.

I dont know about the transfer aspect of this post but the bolded part is definitely true.

I never noticed a large disconnect between the corps and regular students though

the Corp block of seats did not exist in the early 80's with the exception of the band. the corp members were mixed in with all of us. I'm pretty sure the upperclassmen in the Corp hate the corp block because they get crappy seats as opposed to second deck that all the other upperclassmen get.

Also the A&M student sections are predominately the second and third decks - not exactly the best location for the roving cameraman to video hot chicks. The only choice is the crop block for tickets down low.

I do agree that the Corp Block is a big marketing blunder by the school Not sure if we can ever get it changed.
