It's easy to maintain a dog. Especially a collie, just give them a yell leader to hump. Gators are different, they bite shite off and you don't get it back. UF had some live ones, but they died so they said frick it.

There was a pond on A&M's rangeland study area that had a gator in it. They seem to pretty easy to keep alive.
