The OP missed a great opportunity for a thread title with "Houston, we have a problem" but is obviously a knucklehead so they get a pass....

That's incorrect. No city beats out Bakersfield. Any fruits or vegetables advertised as California-grown needs to be doubly washed.

It’s so bad, Buck Owens wouldn’t want to walk the streets there ever again.

ive always thought of dallas as the NYC of the south.

That is correct just like Austin is the San Francisco. Fortunately, Dallas is just a fraction of the DFW metro.

It's all relative. Houston has crime just like every major city, if we're talking smash and grabs is Houston even in the top 15? 20? in property crime per captia. I doubt it.

Its hot just like most places in Texas. Lots of traffic too. With as large (spread out) the city is, it takes time to get places during rush hour.

What Houston does have going for it is a real diversity of culture and food with tons of opportunities and a lower cost of living than most major cities. I would put Houston as a food city vs anyone without flinching. Yall have no idea.

Houston is bad. No denying that but #1? I find that hard to believe.

Houston is FAR better today than it was in the mid 1980s. Not a bad place at all today, the worst of the oil patch in the mid 80s. Houston is also, in my opinion, far better than Dallas. Houston is the south, Dallas is the mid west.

Tend to agree that Houston is better, but only slightly. Dallas was much much better in the 1980s than it is today. Oversprawled with few trees.

That's fair. The only "large" city I have lived in was Austin but left there about 20 years ago when it started growing. As weird as that city was I do miss the old Austin. Hippies have been replaced with progressive loons.

I do remember getting some incredible seafood in Houston once but I can't remember the name of the place. I try to get out as fast as I can.

This. Quirky, weird, fun small city growing to hyper liberal hellscape aka Cali lite.

We've had more people move to Texas in the last 10 years than any other state.
It's the American way to ruin good places by moving there in bulk; California, Denver, Nashville, etc, etc,

Bigger question is if Houston is SOUTHERN or SOUTHWEST?

I agree that Old Austin was great and charming prior to 2005-2010. That charm was lost with all the growth the past 20 years.

Alternatively, Houston has grown but also improved in that time period. Fantastic food scene that doesn’t rely on just BBQ or Tex-Mex. Seafood, Vietnamese food, Kabobs, all sorts of fusion.

yeah, it was a great time to go to school there. It was liberal but they didn't force-feed progressive ideology as part of the curriculum like they do now. It's sad.
UT was a lot of fun back then. I sent my daughter there (just graduated) and now I must reprogram her. Now that she's working and paying taxes I can see her starting to come around slowly

Houston is terrible.
Austin is terrible
Dallas/FW is terrible

See a pattern yet? The largest cities in Texas are overcrowded, hot, and generally miserable. I could say the same for many of the larger Southern cities in other states.

I want to know what the worst infested each area have inside and outside. St. Louis gnats/mosquitoes are the worst I have seen around here this year.
You can post here any of these if you have mice, rats, roaches, and others that have given you problems. It is all about location.

DFW is just tiny mosquitoes that you hardly feel and they never leave welps or anything but do carry west Nile. Couple years here and you’re surely immune to it.
We get attic rats but not if you keep the prime entry areas sealed up. See maybe one giant wolf spider dead every few years if you spray on the reg. Several in the pool every year. You will definitely get black widows if you don’t keep your out buildings sprayed. None if you do. Haven’t seen scorpions up here but they exist. Way more so down south or out west.

It'd be easier to come up with a list of US cities with a 1+ million population that ISN'T a shitehole. I'll start.

Phoenix isn't too bad outside it being in the middle of a desert.

San Jose is pretty nice, or was 10 years ago.
