That long drought of Sweet Sixteen appearances under Heath, Pelphrey and Anderson was a big blow to Arkansas.

Heath took a great program and made it mediocre

Pel took that and burned it down

Mike built back a foundation

Mike should’ve had a sweet 16+ if we weren’t on the wrong side of one of the worst screw jobs I’ve seen vs UNC

Arkansas first was 1958.

Arkansas went to the Final Four during World War II (when field was small so you had to be good). I think it was at least 16 teams back then so Hogs should have at least 1 Sweet Sixteen in the 1940's

I'm surprised Indiana is that low.

Blame ESPN

The "real" rivalry game historically is IU vs UK and real basketball was within the INDY / LOU / LEX / CIN area

Nobody gave two dead flies for the ACC and Dook vs UNC was exploited by ESPN because UK and IU were the in the Big 3 media deals at the time. UK historically had the best radio coverage in the world (think Notre Dame football) and was the root of what became IMG college.

Heath took over a program that was nuked from orbit. He wasn't qualified for the job but did ok considering the lawsuit and bad publicity. He was improving but it wasn't good enough.

The Pel hire was a result of Broyles telling Dana Altman one thing concerning academic advisors and John White telling the opposite. So the confusion and the situation made it shitty enough to make him haul arse back to Omaha.

Mike Anderson was a book definition of mediocre and a lazy recruiter.

8 teams invited in the 1940’s.

1939-1950: 8 teams
1951-1953: 16 teams
1954-1974: 22-25 teams (amount would move some years. 10 teams annually got a bye into regional semifinals)
1975-1978: 32 teams
1979: 40 teams (24 got first round bye)
1980-1984: 48 teams (16 got first round bye)
1985-2000: 64 teams all byes eliminated
2001-2010: 65 teams one “play in game”

2011-Present: 68 teams four “play in games”

Mike was mediocre but he was at least consistently mediocre and made us stable and attractive enough to Muss.

So 44% of the time Bama goes to the NCAA tournament they go to the sweet 16?

That’s pretty solid.
