What is the Auburn brand worth?
At some level, the brand takes a hit with losing consistently. These coaches are paid for performance. That performance is 99% what happens on the field for 4 hours or so on Saturdays.
Gus can turn things around starting Saturday. If not, the seat gets hotter. At the end of the day, win or go home is what it is. Winning is not every thing. It is the only thing.
If season tickets were $50 dollars a set instead of $500 maybe we could talk about graduation rates. If the coaches made 92K instead of 4 million, maybe we could sing the fight song, have a few laughs and enjoy the day.

Here's the real gauge of Auburn stupidity...and I don't know the answer. Maybe someone can fill us in on this:
Is Gus's buyout mitigated by any future salary? Shula's was...his NFL salary was deducted from his Bama buyout.

The biggest problem Auburn has is with recruiting. The instability is going to kill them.

If Bama wanted to fire him without cause, he's owed the balance left on the contract - which was $23 million in 2014.
The only way Saban gets fired is if he gets caught in bed with a live boy or a dead girl.

Isn't there an insurance company the schools could buy a policy for the inevitable coach suckage buy-out?
Hmm, that would be an interesting business idea

Knowing Jay Jacobs, probably not. He gave the man a raise in the off-season when he was already considered, by some (like me), to be on the hot seat.
He's been on a steady decline and it'll likely end with him being fired this season.

At some level, perception is reality.
The masses will not buy your bling if you are not putting a consistent winning product on the field.
I know Forbes valued the AU brand at over 100 million a few years ago.
There may be jokes, but right now the joke is on us for putting Gus above the brand.
I wish coaches were paid for performance with 90% of their pay in bonuses.

I still don't understand why Auburn ran off Tuberville.
Auburn didn't run Tuberville off, Nick Saban processed him.

Exactly!! A great hire would make gus' buyout look like pocket change. But herman is staying put if houston gets in the big 12. Petrino ain't comin' and you dont want that pos anyway....he owes his soul to louisville and has a much easier path to the nattie...if he were interested, no way he stays more than a year or two until he screws up again or something else shiny catches his eye. I don't know the whole story on briles but have him say his confession and lock him down. If he had done anything criminal he'd be in jail and up to his neck in civil suits. Makes Aubie a winner in his first season and he's there forever, and brings recruits out of texas like rain. Please fire the arse clown....PLEASE FIRE THE arse CLOWN

There might...MIGHT...be some university administrator somewhere who is effing stupid enough to do this, but I seriously doubt it.

Maybe they can pawn their big screen, but other than that, auburn is poor.

That's what he would owe Alabama if he wanted to leave for another job. If Bama wanted to fire him without cause, he's owed the balance left on the contract - which was $23 million in 2014
It's not to protect the coach from you firing them.

The problem with that argument is the next hire is never a sure thing. If a program could for sure hire an upgrade for only $14 million every major program would do it. The issue is for every Urban Meyer there is a pile of guys who would do WORSE than Gus.
You can say "well what about Herman," but every single top open position this offseason will offer Herman the job. So at that point you are paying $14 million for the HOPE that your job is tth best one on the market that offseason. There are few sure bets in this field, which is why the SEC is getting worse not better as West programs run off decent coaches who can't measure up to the GOAT.

I'll bet you a buck that gus could be fired... and you hire a mf'in chicken. Just let him crap on a bingo card of random plays and chickees offense will out perform gus'..if it makes you feel better put a sweater vest and visor on the liittle clucker. Heck if you really wanna rile us gumps put a houndstooth cap on the bastard...5 stars come from out of the woodwork to play for the only school badass enough to hire a chicken. Don't know how much a good chicken costs these days but dammit, auburn's got an awesome veterinarian program, get one of them to clone one on the cheap (cheep) and you'll be rolling in dough just as surely as gus is gonna beat out colorado for consecutive home conference losses. Best of all if he fricks up, just slaughter the little prick, put some razors on war eagle's talons and have a ceremony after the last game of the season. Real roman colliseum stuff...do you think calligula's university ever fell from #1 in the bcs??? Hell naw!

That post had a little bit too much Bama in it for my tastes. But I appreciate the sentiment.

At this point, this is not about comparing Gus to Saban. It is about 2-10 in sec play.
It is the longest P5 losing streak in SEC.
It is about an "offensive genius" averaging less than 20 ppg versus real competition.
It is what it is. If you make 4 million and don't win consistently, you get fired.
It may take 3 hires, but sticking with somebody because you might get it wrong means you would stick with chizik, ears whitworth, Curley hallman and sly croom.
Sometimes you have to make changes. Sometimes it is expensive.
