Saw them in Louisville earlier in '77. They had a walk way type of extension that ran out into the audience. We moved next to it during the intermission and got within inches of Collings when he was killing it during Free bird.
Pretty surreal.
Elvis had an incredible voice, his gospel music is phenomenal.

The live album at Knebworrh opening for the Stones is hands down top 10 live performances of all time.

Hell, Creedence Clearwater Revival were from Northern California but they made a lot of music that was relatable to southern folks too

I just referred to this very song and concert!
Well done sir.
There was a band between them and the Stones but no one would dare follow that performance.
Other band claimed a buzz in the PA system. Bottom line, you don't follow that performance.
This band was tight and practiced relentlessly. Drummer did not drag and backup singers were on point.
The audience compared it to a fun fight that broke out with guitars
Stones waited till like 2 in the am to go on stage.
I dare any mother fricker to compete with this post.

Well, it did give us Martina McBride and Chely Wright.

Skynyrd is a national treasure and sweet home Bama one of GOAT. Throw in Simple Man and Free Bird. I’ll still take Alabama over Skynyrd though with a slight edge

Thank you for sharing. I was in HS and it was such a shock to us kids who grew up in Mississippi. The next day at school, that was all we talked about all day long. Very sad.
Little Feat was another great band, though they were from LA, played Southern Rock music. Waiting For Columbus is one of the all time great double albums.
Sadly Lowell George’s death shortly after they had broken up, was a loss that was not replaceable (even though they eventually reunited).
I can still remember where I was the day Elvis died. It was August 16, 1977 and I can remember it like it was yesterday.
And someone mentioned Bing Crosby as well. White Christmas is my favorite Holiday movie and we watch it at least once if not several times during the Christmas season.

I played guitar in the 80's with a guy that became Martina McBride's lead guitarist. And I played guitar with a drummer that was signed by The Dixie Chicks when they were about to launch their Wide Open Spaces tour.
Steve Gaines was from Miami, Oklahoma. As was his sister, Cassie, a backup singer in the band. They were both killed in the plane crash.
