We used to have an unofficial banner that hung in the Swamp that honored those probation teams. But that got taken down.

Just dawned on me that UF’s 1984 forfeited title is still more recent than....

Our head of recruiting came from Auburn.

Pell basically laid the groundwork for what Clemson and Florida are now it seems despite all his issues

Pell gave us a single great year in the 80s
Spurrier gave us 6 sec titles in 11 years I think he gets that honor

No sir, Pell built the program. Spurrier had more success, but Pell took the boosters to another level. He got the big money boys to donate including Ben Hill.

Pell also turned around our facilities too. Went from being junk to world class in 5 years. The man took us from 0-10-1 to 9-1-1. Respect.

The NCAA followed Charlie Pell from Clemson where he left them on probation. They investigated 3 years and came up with I believe were 107 violations. Some were as petty as the Gainesville Sun giving 8x10 photos to players that they took during the games. It was vendetta against Pell for leaving Clemson.
The University of Florida agreed with the NCAA to accept probation beginning in 1985 for the findings because the 1984 team was one of the best in the nation and the best in the SEC. After this agreement, the backstabbers in the SEC lead by the hillbillies, voted to strip UF of the 1984 SEC Championship.
The 1984 Gators were still named National Champions by some publications. I still count that team toward the Gator's 4 National Championship teams.......and the 1985 team that was on probation could possibly have been the best team in the country also but they were officially on probation so they don't count.

It was reduced to 59 from 107.
And no we were not the 1984 National Champions. Brigham Young beat a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl to claim that.

Pell, his assistants, players and boosters would be responsible for what the NCAA first alleged were 107 rules violations and later reduced to 59.

How does a school like Florida not have good athletic facilities prior to Pell. And an athletic department 700,000 dollars in the Red. Poor athletic dorm etc. And not 1 SEC title in football or basketball at that Time.

I beg to differ, The Gators finished third in the Associated Press Poll and seventh in the Coaches Poll, and were also named national champions by twenty-two publications including The New York Times and The Sporting News.

Florida's 1984 SEC Championship taken away from them by the SEC 6 months after the fact was wrong. 1985 was different as they knew what was going on ahead of time, much like Kentucky in 1977 and Auburn in 1993.
I give Galen Hall a lot of credit for naviagting that 1984 through the end of the season and playing excellent football. They lost their season opener in the last :10 to the defending national champion (most misleading final score in history),tied a very talented LSU team and crushed Tulane (who had their own NCAA struggles with THEIR coach). Then Pell gets fired and Florida runs the table and crushing good Auburn and Georgia teams on the way. They could have easily lost focus and not cared.
By the way your Oklahoma team did have to forfeit 8 games in 1972 for using an inelgible player and forfeiting the Big 8. Many years later OU took it upon themselves to reclaim that title in their media guides, etc.

1985 Gators were NC good, even with that 28-28 tie to Rutgers. Defeated eventual SEC champion Tennessee and NC hopeful Miami. Sugar Vols crushed Miami further validating how special those Gators were. Galen Hall is well known around these parts.

Great team. I always liked and respected Kerwin Bell. He was waaaay down the depth chart but persevered & became the starter. Neal Anderson and Ricky the Rocket Nattiel were men among boys.
