Now what exactly happened that was so bad that they had to later forfeit the SEC title? Many programs have done stuff to eventually get put on probation, my Sooners being one of them. But nothing ever forfeited.

Florida was the true #1 in 1984. They are the real national champion.

I think we should claim them like everybody else claims anything possible, but it doesn’t bother me much. It is what it is.

I still don’t understand the vacating of the SEC title though. Florida should claim it. The players have rings for it. Oklahoma was on major probation in 1973 and 1974 stemming from violations that happened at the end of the Fairbanks era. Luckily, the AP didn’t care back then and still awarded the Sooners in 1974 without a bowl berth.

I understand there are different severities or probation. Any similarities to what happened with Florida and what happened with SMU? The Mustangs obviously felt the biggest blow as it wrecked their program for years.

I’d be curious if this has ever been covered in the SEC Network or if there is any video info on it. It’s college football history. I have interest in all programs whether good or bad. I have a l lot of historical knowledge and always looking to learn more.

They would've won the 1985 SEC title as well if they had been eligible iirc

Doug Dickey was just pissed because Florida wouldn't open the pocketbook for him when he was in Gainesville.

Are you serious?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, but Oklahoma has forfeited games.

Charley Pell played and coached at Bama under Bear Bryant. Our head of recruiting came from Auburn. They didn't like each other at all, and were 2 completely different personalities, but they made it work. They brought a lot of knowledge on recruiting the Alabama and Auburn way, but we got caught. Actually an inside guy snitched on us. Mike Brown. Everybody called him Ice Cream.

The NCAA and SEC actually let us have the championship and the presidents of the schools in the SEC got together and railroaded us.

From the NY Times on May 31st

quote:

The presidents of the Southeastern Conference schools voted by 6-4 today to strip the University of Florida of the conference football title it won last fall, the first in the school's history. The action came during the closing business session of the league's annual spring meeting and brought an angry reaction from the Florida president, Marshall Criser, who called it ''extraordinary and unprecedented.''

Florida won the championship last November after compiling a 5-0-1 record in the S.E.C. The team was barred from representing the conference in the Sugar Bowl, however, because of impending N.C.A.A. probation. L.S.U. represented the S.E.C. in the Sugar Bowl after finishing second in the conference with a 4-1-1 record. The decision was made, however, not to recognize a champion for 1984.

Meanwhile, the N.C.A.A. slapped the Gators with a three-year probation with one year off for good behavior in January. On April 3 the S.E.C.'s executive committee ruled Florida had been punished enough and said it would be allowed to keep the championship. Today's action overturned the executive committee's decision.
