1973 Cotton Bowl Classic

Alabama entered the game ranked #4 in the AP Poll at 10-1. Texas entered the game ranked #7 at 9-1. It was the sixth and final time Darrell Royal and Bear Bryant would face off. (Against Texas, Bryant was already 1-2 at Texas A&M and 0-1-1 at Bama.)
The Crimson Tide went up 10-0 in the first quarter and maintained that lead into halftime after each team kicked a FG.
But the second half was all Longhorns as Alan Lowry rushed for two TDs to win the game 17-13.
Texas improved to 6-0-1 all time against the Tide, and Royal remained undefeated against Bama. (Royal had already defeated Alabama both times as Mississippi State's HC.)

QB Alan Lowery clearly stepped out of bounds on the go-ahead touchdown for the Longhorns.

Should have injured QB Alan Lowery the first time Texas recieved the ball, might have won the game if Bama had done that.

In my attempt to educate myself on the SEC... I have religiously watched that series on SEC history...
Regarding that game... Sly Croom was interviewed... And he said that "Alabama didn't want to be there".....
So it doesn't count...

This is why Saban will always be the superior coach. He found a winning strategy.
Though I gotta give Lowry his flowers for a gutsy performance in the Cotton Bowl. He rushed for 117 yards despite running a fever of 104.

So AP #2 OU had already won the Sugar Bowl the night before.
AP #1 USC would beat AP #3 Ohio St in the Rose Bowl later that day.

I was 13 and glad Texas won because I’ve never liked Alabama.

Nice to see the SEC's #1 excuse for losing bowl games is a long term tradition.
