Anyone know anything about these new aluminum boats on the market? Looks like they started building them out of Mississippi last year, and Breaux and Daigle now have them in Pierre Part. Just curious....

Avid Boats

Look good but I’m sure they’ll cost as much as a glass boat

The base price is $34,995.

This includes the Yamaha VF115SHO 25” shaft engine, trailer, a Minn Kota Riptide 80 lb. (36 kg) Fourtrex hand control trolling motor with two batteries, Dual Pro 2 bank onboard charger, and Garmin Echomap 7” Plus GPS/FF with GT23M Transducer. A fuel-water separator is also included.

For some reason most aluminum boat manufacturers just miss the mark for me. Their 23 has a 13 degree deadrise, it’s not self bailing, and it has a 34 gallon gas tank. Most glass manufacturers at 23 feet are making boats that can run to Chandeleur or to chase snapper on nice days, these just don’t fill a need for me. It’s a beautiful boat, It just seems like a really nicely finished excel or express.

They look pretty damn nice. Agree that the fuel capacity needs to be bigger than 34 gallons. Xpress had this same issue for a while. Not sure if they ever increased their fuel tank size.

Also agree that the dead rise could be sharper.

Is that foam sea decking on the 23? Does it come from the factory with that?

Avid is located in Amory, MS. It is owned by the family that started and owned NauticStar boats for 15 years. NauticStar was bought out by Mastercraft a few years ago. The family bought an empty manufacturing plant pretty much next door to the NauticStar plant in Amory and started Avid.

Pathfinder layout with a Hewes/Maverick shape to it. I like it!

Agreed, take a look at the Key West BR230 and compare to the Avid FS23, same length but a whole lot of difference.

Yes, I know KW is a middle of the road ride and not really high end like some of the others.

I really want to check one of these boats out in person. It would be perfect for most of the fishing I do.
It seems like a good compromise between my bass boat and being able to do a little fall inshore fishing.

Every time I see a Yamaha engine... I damned near blush because of how sexy they got the lines on it.

Jesus.

My fishing buddy just bought a 21 bay w/ 175 Yammy SHO. Should fly. I think he paid around 40K for it rigged out, not too bad.
The shallow V was my only concern. He primarily fishes for Reds, so he wasn't too worried about it. It should be coming in this week. I'll report back after I've fished out of it.
I have a 22 Xpress. I get 50-52 w/ the same engine. Curious what he gets.

Yes, about $35-$40k difference. You can have 2x the FS23 so really they are not the same length. 46' > 23'

All joking aside, I hope being associated with NS bloodline will make Avid successful. I know not all are fans of NS but they were one of the better mid-major brands in out area. Hopefully these will do better than Excel. Competition is always good. Im sure though, there will be someone taking an aluminum 12 deg deadrise hull out way beyond the speed and chop its meant for, and you will have a bunch of internet forum complaints of broken welds. I hope Avid has all of their warranty ducks in a row.

It is a really nice set up, but it’s a true inshore machine. If you are mainly an onshore guy and avoid the bigger bays and nearshore fishing it will be a home run for you.

If you are looking at fishing close rigs or nearshore reefs it ain’t built for that.

I thought the same thing. When I was looking at the avid boats I thought it had a lot of the same features as my nautic star.

That lean post looks problematic should a heavy weight get on it when it’s rough. Like the lack of squat at the transom that is typical of most tin bay boats.
