He was rumored to be signing with us a few years ago. He is from the Birmingham area.

What a moron, going across the country with nothing to show for it.

As for the diamond, he appeared in 20 games for the Ducks. He batted .200 with 13 K and 5 BB. He also stole three bases in limited action. I am not sure about his arm or glove. He did not play baseball this past season.

I would note he was the #1 baseball player in Alabama coming out of high school and #121 overall (according to Perfect Game).

I remember when we were recruiting him a few years back. He originally committed to us before flipping to Oregon. He has a good frame, a strong arm, and is a good runner (long strides and very fast, a little bit less shifty than Corral though). He throws a good deep ball and is accurate on short/medium throws. Downsides with Ashford are that his release is a little long and he just hasn't played any meaningful snaps over the past two years. He might be a project, but the front half of our schedule next year is easy, so he could take those games to develop.

I'll be honest, I have no clue why Ashford didn't throw a single pass at Oregon. The guys he was competing with for the backup QB spot looked absolutely terrible on tape (check out the 2021 Oregon Spring game, YouTube - Oregon Spring Game). If we are looking for a bigger version of Matt Corral, this guy might be it. Emphasis on "might be," as replacing Corral is going to be a tough task.

I'd like him to come in and challenge Altmeyer. I think they're both super talented, and depth at QB is something we desperately need. I can see either one of them winning the starting job if Ashford came here.

It makes sense to me.

In the covid year, Oregon played just 7 games. Oregon had a bonafide starter in Shough and a good backup in Brown. In 2021, Brown took over and had a good season. Plus, there were really only a couple of games in 2021 where Oregon could have played some kids in "garbage time."

Thanks for that, I admit I didn’t look into it too hard. I saw that a few other Oregon QBs had gotten some game reps this season and was wondering why Ashford wasn’t one of them. So, a good QB prospect goes to a big school, gets buried on the depth chart, and now wants out. If we can land Ashford, Evans, and Deion Smith in one cycle, our offense won’t miss a beat. I’ll also take Caleb Williams if Ashford doesn’t work out.

All that said, I think Altmeyer can be a great QB once he gets some games under his belt. However, we badly need some QB depth.
