Looking back on it, the bear wasn’t that bad of a mascot choice. I still have no idea what lead to them getting rid of that

The bear is question was native to Louisiana

I still say it should be the "Fightin Faulkners" but what do I know.

It's also native to Mississippi. Just because it's named "Louisiana Black Bear" doesn't mean it can't be native to any other state.

I get it is also native to MS but as The University of Mississippi it would be good to not have an animal named after another state.

you're really looking too hard into that.

I can't imagine why anyone would care that much about the species name of a costume.

We are named after a train. Why not be the Ole Miss Express and get that song Ole Miss Blues played at games. And have steam and a train whistle when we score? Beats the hell out of a shark and even a bear wearing a suit or football uniform.

Maybe because we are the Ole Miss Rebels, not the express, and don’t need a mascot?

You don't think the shark and black bear were the first step away from Rebels? Because it was.

We were emphatically told that Col. Rebel was the first step away from Rebels.

Especially when a rival is in that state, just seems dumb. Would be like if some Arkansas razorbacks were in Missouri and the Tigers made it their new mascot.

A 1902 graduate named Marvin Holloman Brown wrote an essay in which he pretended to re-live, but admitted at the end he was only imagining, a game between Mississippi and Vanderbilt : “What a victory we felt was ours can be appreciated only by one of Ole Miss’ devotees!”

Vanderbilt needs to be a protected rival for Ole Miss but ESPN will probably tell the SEC not to make it happen.

I thought Ole Miss was originally The Flood to go with The Green Wave and the Crimson Tide. What happened to The Flood?

Is the elephant native to Alabama? Why does it matter? Anything is better than a made up animal.

Agree except for the fact that nothing is also better than a made up animal.

Bama's connection to the elephant comes from a sportswriter saying their players were "as big as elephants" back in the day, IIRC. Apparently it just stuck.

That’s correct. But his point is still valid.

Our connection to the bear is because of a writers short story.

And it’s better than schools like LSU where theirs is directly connected to the confederacy.
