Really? If you aren't using it already, check out the Trulia app. I found and signed a lease on a house in midtown with all appliances except w/d just last week
Very helpful app though.

Also the guy who told me to stick to west Mobile is in his early to mid 30s with a family. I assume that area is more suitable for that kind of person.

Yeah. I grew up in the Springhill/West Mobile area. Mostly families.

I'm assuming West Mobile is suburbs. I live in the suburbs of Birmingham and in my 40's. I always wonder about young, single professionals that choose to live in this strip mall, cookie cutter wasteland. It's especially weird going to a bar out here in the burbs and seeng a group of twenty-something's. I always want to ask them if they're lost.

Ive lived in west mobile for 4 years of grad school. Everything you need is close and its a good area. Its a great place if you want to lay low and occasionally go out.
If you want to go out more often and take part in what nightlife mobtown has, go midtown.
I wouldn't do anything different than I did.

It is. The white flight went west to West Mobile and across the bay to the Eastern Shore. West Mobile is about the last place a young dude would want to be. Traffic sucks (at least last time I was in Mobile I was shocked at the traffic heading back to West Mobile), it's full of young families and strip malls.
The Eastern Shore has some cool stuff, is closer to the beach, but is still rather suburban.
Midcity would be my suggestion. Close to everything in an area that is up and coming from what I understand. Even downtown might be an option. Really depends on where dude is going to be working.

I'll be working right beside the Bel Air mall. At Airport and I65 if that tells anything.

Airport.

The original traffic disaster in Mobile. That's actually a pretty good location to be working. That's pretty much the middle of everywhere. Midtown is definitely where I'd look. It wouldn't be very far to work and you're in the middle of bars and restaurants that are popping up.
I'd also make a note of how to get to the Beltline (I65 frontage) and how to get to Cottage Hill from the mall.

I would not make the drive to and from Daphne everyday

Speaking of, if you haven't driven on Airport alot yet, get a co-worker to explain it. Airport and it's service roads can be confusing to someone that isn't used to it. It's one of the worst roads in Alabama

OP, I'm laughing, but not because he's joking. Airport feels like a complete shite-show the first time you drive it during rush hour.

Airport is a complete shite show at 5 no matter what.

I would rent a house in midtown or there are a few decent apartments close by there. Imperial Mason is one of them. Also, if you can, think about getting a condo downtown. I think a young single guy would love that.

That's exactly where my office is. I've just seen the nicer apartments online in the west Mobile area. Midtown doesn't have as much it seems. The service roads suck just about as bad though.
Airport is a shitshow. I interned in Mobile last summer and lived with family in the Theodore/Dog River area last year. The first month I was there I didn't know what to do with all those service/frontage roads.

There's a quality condo complex on Old Shell Road (street # around 4000 probably) that my friend used to live in called Spanish Villa. It's in Springhill, but it's close to your work and not too far from some bars. Right next to Springhill College and a mile from South Alabama. Might want to check them out, especially if you're single...just be careful, my old high school is also right next door
