I liked the original better also but it too was dark. Didn't the fat kid explode and a one of the little girls drown in the first one?

Yeah, Johnny Depp was just sort of a dufus. Gene Wilder's portrayal made you think the character really was a bit psychotic, in a 'Psycho' Norman kinda way.
