Read somewhere there are actually more interracial relationships down south than up north and I can believe it. I would never walk a step in Boston alone at night

Don't fall for the liberal "whites are southern racist rednecks" bit.
Man, I'm from the south. I graduated from a small town HS that had 300 kids. I've seen the chi first hand.
My immediate family may be from New Orleans, but the vast majority of us are from north LA.
I know plenty of bigots. And I also know dozens of people from other places, further north. There's a difference in ideals, but there's more pure ignorance down here.

But we southerners have a reputation. And it aint a good'n.
It's a combination of white guilt, a history of slavery and the liberal narrative used to buy votes. Sprinkle in the fact that most southern states vote red and rednecks are really rough around the edges and you get the reputation.
Sure there are racists in the south, but let's also not forget that anyone who doesn't support welfare or affirmative action is called a racist these days.

Meh, you only live once. Eat good food, drink great whiskey, stay active and get checked regularly. After that it's all genetics and luck.
I've seen triathletes come through the ER with heart attacks at 35 and obese chain smokers lived to be 90. My best friend's dad growing up was super fit and died on his living room floor at 39 doing one-handed pushups. No point in worrying about it.

Methinks you have no idea what the frick you are talking about.
The south has some racism, but not as much as most think. Go to LA, Boston or Chicago and you'll find it easily. Not sure what you mean by skewed religious views...skewed by whose standard? yours?
Obesity is a problem. Spend some time traveling the country. its a problem in the US. You can thank McDonalds, frozen food and cheap beer.

I don't give a good god damn what the rest of the country thinks about the South.
That's why we're stuck in our ways, and its our prerogative to do so (or in this case, to NOT do so).

Why are you putting all southerners into this stereotype, because neither my husband nor I fit.

Just from my experience (and I'm from Texas, not Dixie) I think some people who are opinionated and rough around the edges get misunderstood as racists.
Just as an example: My grandfather is a very Christian man, very charitable, never has a bad word to say about any person individually. One of his best friends who he golfs with every week is black and they talk racist smack back and forth all the time on the course (For the record, there is nothing funnier than a 90 year old drunk black guy calling someone a honkey).
Now, I know my grandfather. He'd give a black guy the shirt off his back just to save him a little trouble. But he comes from a different generation and is from the south and just doesn't give a frick. He's not a racist in that he hates blacks or is bigoted, but he could certainly come off that way from a five minute soundbyte.

Boston is as much white on white Italian/Irish hate as it is racism

Well, I've visited 44 states and have a job that required me to travel a lot. I have been all over and made friends all over. I've lived in 4 different states as well.

Well we can agree to disagree on this.

Nope. Skewed by Jesus' standards. You know, where he essentially says to worry about your own shite instead of other peoples. It's in Matthew.

I've traveled, a lot.

You're a damn fool. What you can blame is people's decisions to eat poorly. You can blame socioeconomics. But you damn sure can't blame it on Mickey D's. Nobody puts a gun to your head and makes you get a #7 with a sweet tea.

I could edit. I'm a southerner, and I'm not like this either.
I'll edit.

Your 90 year old grandfather is not the issue. My grandpas were the same way, but do you not find it odd that 90 years later, the same shite is still being said?
It's 2014 and we still have folks claiming that gays are going to hell and that Black History Month and BET is racist.

I'm Boston born but Kentucky raised. I absolutely love the South. It is the biggest and most diverse region of the country. The only prejudice I've noticed in the last 25 years is driven by economic status.
The South will, at the end of this century, be the economic and cultural center of the country. That seems inevitable. We're slowly but surely dropping social conservatism but holding firm regarding fiscal conservatism. That is the ideal mix for a region that has happy and healthy people.

this is the type of answer I really was looking for in the OP.

Former Southerner here who lives in a place that's almost the exact opposite.
Southerners love tradition, family, peers. Those things aren't bad by themselves and can be very positive but...Southerners are very cliquish and seek approval of others, and don't value individuality or expression. This is a generalization and certainly isn't indicative of all Southerners.
I hated the cliquish, conformist behavior though. People can't be different because they have to find approval for family or occupational reasons. They look alike, dress alike and drive the same vehicles and ridicule anyone who's different.
