Now I’m not going from you’re opinion of your favorite shows
For example one guy could say The Office is his favorite show

But in terms of overall significance? People consistently talking about it etc

Where does it rank?
I guess it’s a lot different now with social media streaming etc.
But older folks, what was office talk like for other shows? Sopranos? MASH? Star Trek?

I do know in my group of friends #1 conversation in the group chat is always sports, after that and during this time is Game of Thrones and after that nothing else is close.

But even this morning the news talking about the finale etc.

In my time I’ve never seen anything like it for a show

And I’ll say this.
I watched about 15 mins of the first episode and couldn’t get into it.
I’m not into it and really couldn’t care less about it
And I’m by no means hating on it. Because I don’t. You will never see me make fun of it.

But I have to admit this is the largest I’ve ever seen the country behind a TV show

I’m also only in my 20s. So i wasn’t of this age when Sopranos was around so why I ask

ETA: it just seems to engulf everything too
Look at Adidas, releasing GOT theme shoes, Oreos making GOT cookies, GOT wine and beer etc

Like a lot of fads it will be remembered for being intensely popular in its day and a bit underwhelming when viewed later on.

It is a master class in "event" TV. It didn't matter whether the episode was good or not, though they did have some good ones, it mattered if you watched it because it was the thing to watch. Sort of like Paris Hilton being famous for being famous.

Now some dyed in the wool GoT fans will throw an absolute wobbler here thinking I'm mocking their favorite show. I'm not. It did what it did very well for the most part and HBO managed to give it that aura of must see TV.

I just don't really get in to tv shows. I'm not interested in investing that much time to watching anything. Hell, I'm getting to where I don't even watch sports as much as I used to.

But as I said this isn’t your opinion of the show or TV

Do you not hear around you at work or notice the consistent buzz this TV show creates?
(Or is it created since it’s over?)

Preach, brother, preach. As I've grown older I've become the anti-binge watcher.

For me I’m actually the opposite.
I have very little patience
As I get older and more and more shows are released on Netflix or Hulu I feel like I’d rather just binge an entire show on a rainy day than wait 2-3 months to watch an entire season just once a week

I do get what you mean. I've just eased back on the binging. Usually I'll watch a few episodes here, do something else for a few weeks, then watch a few episodes there.

Yeah, many future writers will be inspired by watching this show. We're going to see an influx of popular characters killed off in gruesome, blindsiding ways in writing for all forms of media. Some will do it well for the story and others will do it just for the shock value.

We had that well before GRRM wrote the first rape scene for Game of Thrones to be honest. Joss Whedon was notorious for killing off beloved characters out of the blue. At first it was stunning and amazing. Then it became annoying. Now its just sort of a given he'll create a beloved character and kill them in a meaningless way.

Its akin to the Southern Pro Wrasslin' law of bloody brawls. One over the top brawl is great! Two in a row is OK. Three and a row and the audience is dead.

You need to space these things out. When they become your calling card the audience starts to expect it and there isn't any reaction when it happens.

Don't tell that to Straws, he will DEFINITELY kill you with words and let you know he knows things.

(add another - haven't watched - don't do soap operas - cord cutter)

But to offer an answer: it's probably not near as high as it seems right now.

Will it go into syndication like a Friends, Mash, Gillian's Island, or I love Lucy? That would drive it to a more lasting status. Will it be eclipsed by another of it's own genre like South Park did to the Simpson's? That's my guess since it's struck gold - it's the standard for the moment - but the dollars will drive something more outlandish to market. Nature abhors a vacuum. However if it goes the route of movie trilogy (instead of sequels) it'll reap even far more hype, dollars, and create a much long lasting fame. (again from a non-viewer) - The let down ending seems almost a setup for such.

I sort of see it much like another "Breaking Bad" but with sex scenes, that will at least go box-set blu-ray like Weeds... and then fade with age (again if it doesn't go big screen). So I'll give it top ten rating at the moment, that could with the right legacy eventually push it up behind Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings (trilogy).

So between the 2 HBO dramas that everyone ranks as the most significant (this and sopranos)

Which would you say is greater?

Will have to read it here. (Never watched an episode of either one.)

It's just a personal tick (no shade to throw) but I like each show in a series to be able to stand on it's own. Having a couple/few/many major underlying themes is essential; but tell me sell me a short story every couple shows. Longmire was great about this for a while. Until it became every increasingly about the long or end game.

Maybe these pulled it off - you'll have to let me know? I usually bail when it becomes more about the characters than the story.

Oh i haven’t watched either

As I’ve said I never watched GOT.
I just have never seen something like this in this time for a TV show

Maybe it’s recency bias
