Have there been studies on this behavior? I enjoy some light hearted sports smack, but some here live to rattle the cage and attempt to upset people.
There are some bright folks here. I am interested in your thoughts.

Of these, I think desensitization has the greatest effect. It seems normal to insult someone on the Internet, especially for younger people. We've had easy, almost-universal access to the Internet for only about 20 years. Things could change.

Of course I have. I also knew them and that was a small percentage of interaction. I am speaking more to the full time trolls on boards.
It's a genuine curiosity. All the u mads and u a pussy don't bother me in the least cause I don't know you. It's no consequence. I find it fascinating in a way that people will spend their downtime fricking with complete strangers on the Internet. Maybe it's a release from real life stresses...

I do it when the following conditions are met:
1. I'm bored
2. The topic is controversial enough to illicit some very strong reactions from the Rant's more vocal and opinionated posters.
At the core of all of this is that my Mother didn't love me enough as a child.
