What is your opinion on renting one of those "basement apartments"?

Like a converted basement into basically an apartment. What do you call these? A "mother in-law" basement or something?

When I get back from Nashville I'll be on the road a lot and possibly end up moving within a year or so. I'm thinking this could be an option but have no idea what to type in on craigslist to find one of these

Anyone have any experiences with this? How'd it turn out?

Type "shitty, dank arse basement apartment."

You should be fine.

It just seems brutal. I don't know where you're living, but there always seems to be a few little cheapy apartment complexes available. I know most of my friends found them.

The one friend I had that was in a home apartment always had issues getting stuff fixed. At least with a complex you'll have someone to bitch at that doesn't live on top of you.

It's not really a money thing, seeing as how my rent was pretty expensive before I left for Minnesota. But I'd be in Nashville.

You may not know the area, but in case you do, I'm looking in the Belmont and/or Vandy area.

Both areas kinda come together.

Really depends on where you're renting. My ex had one for about a year but it was in a former 1890's mansion that was split up into apartments and completely restored. He found it just driving around looking for apartments. It was great for him living by himself, knowing it was just a temporary spot.

Here's a pic from the neighborhood website. It's the blue building in the forefront.

I'd stay away from Craiglist though.

See, that's what I'm kinda picturing. Not really just a suburban house with a finished basement

Where is that at?

Craigslist is probably not the best idea. Idk where to look though on the internet :(

Belgravia Ct. here in Louisville.

It's part of St. James Court. When they had the Southern Exposition here in the 1880s, they sold the plots and created a high-end district for some of the wealthiest people in Louisville. There's no immediate street access and is considering a "walking court". Still has the original (and functioning) gas lights from the late 1800s and a huge cast iron fountain in the middle of the court.

If you're looking at a particular neighborhood sometimes their neighborhood associations will have websites with apartment listings.

I'm a former Minnesotan myself, I find that the "basement apartments" are far, FAR worse in the south. Here in Baton Rouge, we call them "indoor pools." In Nashville, be ready to run a dehumidifier 24/7 in summer. It'll still stink.

The more I look the more I think I'm just going to try to find an open-spaced loft right outside of downtown

Having some trouble though

I have never seen a basement apt in BR. That's a terrible idea.

Is a wide-open loft style deal called a flat?

Nah, a flat has at least 1 bedroom.

That's what I'm looking for, but I when I type in studio it's just showing me regular apartments.
