Google and the government can track you with those things in an unholy fashion.

I've got a fitbit Charge HR. Bought one with a Best Buy card I got for Christmas. So far it's awesome. It keeps track of my heart rate, step count, how many stairs I've climbed and using all that plus my height and weight calculates about how many calories I burned. And it serves as a watch. I'm a fan.

It only has a Bluetooth transmitter. All of the movement stuff is just sensors. If you carry a cell phone, you're way more fricked than you are with a fitbit.

I had a Jawbone UP and liked it and the software as well. Got an Apple Watch for Christmas its been pretty good so far. I can still use the Jawbone app to see my steps and activity as well so it was a pretty clean transition.

Fitbit Charge HR for me. I was mainly interested in tracking heart rate and sleep but now find myself keeping track of # of steps, active minutes, etc. It is a bit of an additional motivator to get off my arse.

Fitbit Surge for me. I like that it looks more like a watch and the gps tracker is fun when I go on a run. The gps is also nice because when I am in the woods I can turn it on to mark spots and import it into my maps.

Good luck! The best thing about fitness trackers like the Fitbit, is the ease of tracking calories consumed vs what you burn. It takes the old days guess work out of dieting, and makes losing weight very simple. Just scan the barcode or search for what you're eating, and it will do everything for you. Tracking calories eaten, and having it constantly on your wrist , is a great motivational tool. The best advice I can give you in your journey to riches, is to be consistent in tracking your calories consumed. It will help keep you honest, and so try not to miss a day. The biggest mistake people make, is forgetting to log (after a cheat meal or any other time), and falling out of the habit. Once you get off the routine, it's easy to stray and blow your hard work. Again, best of luck to you

Fitbit charge, fun little competition between me and co-workers. about 6 of us have one and we do daily competitions for most steps. If you are competitive it keeps you going.
