I was 2 when the whole Koresh thing happened but events like that and Jonestown have always fascinated me. I'm curious to hear any of your perspectives on what it was like at that time and what led to it. I mean if a man claimed he was the son of God nowadays I doubt anyone would pay him any attention yet back then many willingly followed. I know we have posters from all over who do all sorts of jobs. Curious as to your knowledge on the subject.

I can just about guarantee you that somewhere in the US today is a guy who has at least a few followers who believe he's a messiah. There are some very charismatic sociopaths out there and some people out there, for one reason or another, will believe some crazy shite.

There is a guy out there today who is heralded by many as the second coming of Christ. Maitreya is his name, and he claims to be the World Teacher. The Buddhists would refer to him as the future Buddha. The one who will teach the world the pure Dharma.

He has loads of followers.

There is another guy who claims to be like hundreds of years old (looks like he's in his 50s) who also claims to be a savior of man and he has developed a new religious practice called Falun Gong. LINK

What's interesting about Falun Gong is that the guy who developed it claims to be powerful enough that he knows when someone begins the practice for themselves and can place the Falun within you remotely. Like from his house in China. And the Chinese government has apparently started killing people who practice this spiritualism.

So yeah, there are still folks out there like Koresch. And they still gain followers.

I can understand this I suppose. There's enough lunatic fringe and religious zealots and the mob mentality is quite persuasive. It seems obvious when so many of these claimed messiah from various religious sects are already dead gone but the need some feel for something powerful and tangible to happen in their lives is present. Like I said. I just find the whole ordeal fascinating

I was just out of college and working in Dallas. The news media played it up for sure. As I recall it was a year or two in the making culminated by week long standoff that ended up as well all know it.

He was a freaking nut job. But like anything even today. When the shite hit the fan - one week later they were on to something else.

It was a bad deal all around. The feds relied on information from some people who "escaped" from the place and went all out retarded on how to handle the situation. Dude was a nut job and was doing all kinds of immoral shite but nobody deserves to go out the way the feds took them out. You can bet the show will glorify and justify the gross overuse of force by the government. I lived not far from where all this happened at the time and it was completely and utterly mishandled.

It was the ATF they sent in, wasn't it?

I imagine they were claiming he was stockpiling illegal firearms. So they went to confiscate them and when he wouldn't turn himself over to them they set fire to the place.

One of the darkest moments in American history if you ask me.

ETA: So the way they will spin it is that he was a monster who had brainwashed all those people into doing anything and everything he said and ultimately, because of this, he led them all to their demise.

"All he had to do was turn himself in, but instead he attempted to wage war against the federal government." ***Cough***bullshite***Cough***

And coincidentally (if you believe that shite), they had plans to put a highway right through the land the compound sat on. Last I heard they were gonna dig up all those graves and move them so they can pave it all over.

If you believe the evidence collected afterward within the hundreds of guns were 46 semi-autos that were converted to full auto fire.

Most everything I have seen about it acknowledges that law enforcement screwed up. At the time just watching it on TV it felt as if it was on a slow roll to a bad end the entire time.

I mean sure. If you expect the Government to follow the same laws they subject their citizens to, then yeah, they fricked up. However, one thing you can take to the bank is that if your property sits on land the government wants, for whatever reason, they will kill your arse to take it if they have to.

See the recent example with the Bundys up there in Oregon. That dude was recently acquitted of all the shite they had tried to charge him with, BTW. At the end of the day he was one of the few that didn't lose everything.

I was responding specifically to the question about stockpiles of guns being illegal. Illegal weapons were the reason for the initial arrest warrant. The whole thing started because of the discovery of the grenade shipment to the compound.

As far as public opinion back then...

People thought he was a nut job and the branch davidians were a wacky cult. People basically thought crazy fools but harmless and who cares (for the most part).

Then the media played up the angle that children were being abused and federal officials had been shot and killed.

Public opinion turned against them. The public began to get restless over the standoff.

The public began to demand action and an end to the standoff.

The Feds obliged and went in and slaughtered everyone.

The public shares a good deal of blame in all that went wrong, as do the feds and the media.
