hopefully it won't be a factor for Auburn flying back after the SEC's worse NCAA tournament loss ever

I'm hearing reports of the bama trailer park homeowner's association cancelling homeshooling classes.

Should make track practice interesting today

Sheesh. It always seems like Tuscaloosa and Birmingham are ground Zero for tornado outbreaks, and strong ones at that.

A nice thunderstorm just rolled through the metro. Hail all around town. Sun's out in Southside now. Nice unstable airmass.

Once again, James Spann and the Birmingham TV media hype up an event that doesn’t even affect Bham Metro. I get being cautious and weather is unpredictable, but we’ve gotten to the point where the city shuts down everytime there’s a mere threat. Schools and businesses around town closed at noon FFS.

The original threat zone included almost all of Jefferson County.

That's not evident from your post.

Hail in Harvest, near Huntsville. A little bit southeast of the tornado that hit Ardmore earlier.
The news right now is showing baseball sized hail in Cullman County.

No, I get it. However there has to be a way to balance being cautious while not closing all schools and businesses everytime. We’ve had multiple days in the last year alone where the city was shut down and literally nothing happened.
Today’s event aside, the Birmingham Media clearly loves to hype these events up to the point where they almost fabricate the news. We see it all the time whenever it could potentially snow.

Businesses can usually afford to wait until a storm system comes through to know whether they might be affected.
Schools on the other hand are different. 90% of school students don't have their own transportation and it takes hours to contact parents and bus drivers, and have all kids picked up and delivered safely to homes. Dismissing schools for tornado warnings as a rule is relatively recent and is directly related to the tornado that hit Enterprise High School.
Right or wrong, no public school in Alabama will ever take a chance on not dismissing school again if there's a chance of a tornado. It's not a risk administrators are willing to accept any more.

That's true. They need to cut it out. People panic enough on their own.

I think back to the snow event in January and how all 4 Bham stations hyped up another Snowmageddon. When it didn’t pan out, they pounced on the story of an overturned 18 wheeler. They labled it a “weather related crash” but refused to give specifics for hours but they treated it like it was due to ice. Turns out it merely had a blown out tire.
They clearly have agendas in all of this and if you follow the coverage, you can tell when they really are grasping for any bit of news to justify the extensive coverage. I have heard this line too many times today from Birmingham television personalities: “We’ve been asked if this is anything like April 27th, 2011. Just remember, all it takes is one tornado hitting your house for it to be your own April 27th.” That’s sounds nice but it’s just a cover line to justify the wall-to-wall coverage and shield them from any accountability.
This isn’t popular but Spann is sometimes a major part of the problem.

Looking at this storm, it's obvious that Spann and the other meteorologists were absolutely correct in their wall to wall coverage, even though all I got out of it was a bit of heavy rain.
Not offering continuous coverage of a storm system that spawned multiple tornadoes across their viewing area and tens of millions in property damage, would have been a dereliction of his professional responsibility.
I think people in Birmingham will get over missing American Idol tonight.
