I got ropped to a trip to Austin for a weekend with some college buddies. I thought about a UT game but they play UTEP at 6:30. What are the best bars/restraints/activities to see while we are in town? We get in Friday morning leave Sunday morning.

Depends on your age for bar scene. Young ut girls will be west sixth. Try rio, dogwood, concrete cowboy, the ranch, brew exchange, star bar.

Lots of great food if staying downtown. Lamberts bbq will have shortest wait. Terry blacks on Barton springs same thing. Mexican food is all over. Chuys on Barton springs if you are gringo you will like.

Outdoor activities Barton springs pool, greenbelt try sculpture falls on 360, less crowded than the place at mopac and 360.

Strip clubs palazio, yellow rose, expose in that order.

South congress has food but long waits. Hopdoddy burger, home slice pizza, gueros Mexican

Rainy street is ok but is always stupid crowded. Bangers, icenhowers.

Hipsters fricks east of 35. Violet crown, white horse if you like well whiskey and cigarettes.

- south congress is fun during the day.
- I always suggest Muellers BBQ in East Austin. No wait. great quality.

The W bar is fun too.

Rainey Street is a must stop.

It is hard to screw up a weekend in Austin if you like good drinks and food.

was in Mason first. but it's great BBQ.

if you're young and looking to have a good time, west 6th street and don't leave.

if you're wanting to experience the town.... maybe a little west 6th street, but hit the capital, zilker park, UT campus is kinda cool for a school built into a city, Arboretum area has a lot of good restaurants.

ETA: i dislike Austin and think it's a pretentious shithole. i have to spend one night a year in downtown and i hate it.

The Domain has kinda taken that over. Top Golf or Punch Bowl Social around there is a blast.

domains a little too "high class" for me. but yes to both places mentioned. Punch Bowl Social is a blast. you can also do indoor skydiving at ifly. lone star court is a cool fairly priced hotel in that area as we..

Other than 6th Street, is there really much to do in Austin these days? School is not in yet is it?

I guess I just have never liked Austin and every time I went it was for a game we were in (NCAA tournaments in the Drum or at the Disch) or went with relatives to see the Hogs play.

I really do not like Houston or Byant/College Station much either. However Dallas, San Antonio, San Marcos, and sometimes Corpus were places I had a good time at.

But there is no worse cities in Texas than Lubbock, Denton, and Huntsville.

i didn't know we hated on Denton. why do we hate on Denton?

ETA: i travel the state for a living. Alice, Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, George West, Andrews, Laredo, anything near Beaumont, and especially, Van Horn are our worst towns.

Wouldn't UNT be reason enough? Fouts Field is also a good enough reason.

I don't classify Laredo as a city, it is more of a depot.

Alice, Carrizo Springs, Kenedy, Karnes City, Yorktown, Three Rivers, Beeville, Floresville, Cuero, Cotulla, etc etc etc all suck. Draw a triangle from Laredo to Corpus to San Antonio and every last place in middle of that three walled hell of South Texas absolutely sucks. Sometimes I'm almost glad the price of oil crashed or I might still be out there.

i actually like Beeville. maybe it's just the people i worked with

i would include the valley in a lot of this, but McAllen's actually a nice town all things considering.
