Well, this thread is certainly a good example of 'southerners' being just as judgmental as anyone from outside of the south.

It's like some people can't sense irony even when it's slamming them in the face.

While I found the article (and Reeves' writing) amateurish, the topic at-issue is, in my opinion, very real.
The image of a benighted South, sadly, has persisted since H.L. Mencken, et al. in the 20's. Not only did Northerners come to see the South as inferior artistically, intellectually, culturally, morally, etc., but some southerners incorporated this into their own individual/community-identity.
The fact that this piece merited publication is disturbing. Is it truly that shocking to some folks that the South is (gasp!) not significantly more bigoted than the rest of the nation?

There's a book by a professor at Michigan called "The Myth of Southern Exceptionalism" that tackles this idea. Basically, Southerners need to stop acting as if the South is something special and unique, and everybody else needs to stop acting as if the South is something that's drastically different (or worse) than the rest of the country.
Yes, we have differences, but they're largely subtle and superficial. At least that's his argument. He really goes into the way they teach the Civil Rights Era in schools, how they focus so heavily on things like James Meredith and Rosa Parks while ignoring race riots in Detroit, lynchings in Times Square, etc.
Just a thought.

Eh, yes and no.
I see your point, but then again interracial violent crime is very rare, especially in the South. If a white person is murdered, the chances that his murderer is white is WAY higher than the chances that his murderer is black, and vice versa. Murders are most commonly carried out by someone who knows the person they're murdering. Being killed by a stranger, while it happens, is really rare.

This is a good point. Northerners like to point the finger at race relations in the South as a way to avoid dealing with their own race problems. Everyone knows about Wallace standing in the schoolhouse door, but not nearly as many people know about the way that Boston reacted to school integration, for example.
