I read a book recently which detailed how rum was really important to the slave trade. So the slave were needed to harvest sugarcane, which was used to make molasses which is then used to make rum. The rum would be sold for money and slaves, which would then be used to harvest the sugarcane... and so on and so forth.

A lot of things fueled the slave trade, not the least of which was booze.

In all seriousness, I've said it a ton. Usually with my friends that happen to be black. If you're not coming from a bad place with it, it's just as valid as any other word. Trying to sneak it out like you're doing something wrong is when it's an issue.

Would I just start blasting it off in public? No, but I wouldn't for many words.

I just fear being in a Paula Deen situation and losing my job because I've uttered a word that's been given so much power in today's society.
