What if I told you an old man who plays dress up and thinks he's the voice of God was coming to America? Well, he is, and people are losing their shite over this like it's the 2nd coming of Jesus himself. If his name wasn't "Pope" you'd not let your kids get close to him because you'd think he's off his fricking rocker.

It's sad we still live in a world where muslims kill people for Allah, politicians stay devoted to Israel because of the Old Testament, and people think the Pope is anything more than a pretentious dude in a costume.

1. He doesn't think he's the voice of God.

2. He is the 266th pontiff in a line of succession that goes all the way back to the first century. And he's in charge of one billion Catholics around the world. That's kind of a big deal.

The Church has no power in comparison to what it used to have. The pope is becoming like the Queen of England, just a figurehead.

Well thats what they want you to think is the reason, thats never been the reason. A very important distinction

This is true but this has been the case for the last 400 years.

1. You are sorely mistaken. He still has absolute power over matters of faith and morals within the Catholic Church.

2. Didn't we roll out the red carpet for Queen Elizabeth II when she visited in 1957, 1976, 1991, and 2007?

Did you cry this hard when the Dali Lama was in the U.S.?

Why do you even care? Im not even religious,, but it's ridiculous that atheists get so worked up about what Christians do. If you posted about a sports team in this tone you'd be getting called "butthurt" left and right. So why are you so "butthurt"?

Semantics...

quote:

Papal infallibility is a dogma of the Catholic Church that states that, in virtue of the promise of Jesus to Peter, the Pope is preserved from the possibility of error "When, in the exercise of his office as shepherd and teacher of all Christians, in virtue of his supreme apostolic authority, he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole Church."[1][2]

No, it really isn't. It is merely stating that, when the Pope speaks ex cathedra (which he never does), he is protected from error by the Holy Spirit. There is a difference between being protected from error by God and being the voice of God.

You sound like one of those folks who goes to a church that uses powerpoint in its services.

in the same boat. i guess i could be called religious, by faith in Jesus, but i'm not majorly hung up on any denomination and any organized religion.

but... the pope is the spiritual head to millions, if not a billion people. and even though i imagine that we want to get there through different means, he has some strong compassion and desire to see the money part of the church go away.

this was a big statement to me.

i don't know about that- he seems to be the pope that's trying to bring Catholicism into the 21st century.

I'd rather people freak out about the Pope than the Kardashians

He is also a head of state - so he merits at least as much attention as any other such visit.
