Spending Thanksgiving in Starkville
Hey there :)

So, we are four footballfanatic gentlemen from Scandinavia visiting TX,LA,MS and AL next month, and we'll be in Starkville for the Egg-bowl on Thanksgiving. This is far from our first time in the US, but it is the first time visiting on Thanksgiving.

Do you have any suggestion on how to spend the day? Should we just go to the tailgating at the stadium, or is there anything else going on, which would give us a more true Thanksgiving experience?

This is one of five games on our trip, so there will be a lot of opportunities to tailgate elsewhere.

I would definitely take some time to visit the The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana in the campus library. The museum documents the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. The Collection complements Civil War-related materials in the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and Mississippi State University Libraries Special Collections.

For food, eat local. You can't go wrong with Little Dooey's (Catfish or Texas Toast BBQ), The Veranda, Restaurant Tyler (Get the Porkchop), Mugshots, Bulldog Burger (New Favorite spot), Two Brother's smoked meats (Wings), Dave's Darkhorse Tavern (Lamb Pizza), Starkville Cafe (Breakfast). The CampHouse has a really good oyster poboy with leidenheimer bread. Owner was telling me that they have Oysters shipped up from south of Houma if you are feeling seafood while in town.

The cotton district has a bunch of patio style bars that are really fun for day drinking. Downtown night life is pretty meh. They have a Moe's that can be fun, but most of the good times are in the Cotton District. Bin 612 is a good time and usually a post grad crowd.

Tailgating is all right outside of the stadium in the Junction. Put your beer in a cup to avoid any BS from our police. The Dawg Walk is a pretty cool experience. Your best best is going right into the heart of the Junction. Fraternize with some State folks and you will be invited into someone's tailgate in no time. If you are sneaking liquor in the game, put it in your waistband. I've seen gaurds on occasion check boots.

If you like to play Golf there are two courses in West Point, Mississippi which house two of the nicest courses in the state. Old Waverly and Mossy Oak. Mississippi State also has a very well kept university course that is affordable for those on a tighter budget. Tickets really shouldn't be that hard to come by. Your best bet for free parking is just driving around until you see an open spot off the highway.

I wish the Arkansas football team was good enough for me to suggest you come up to Fayetteville for a game but alas we most certainly aren't.

If you are going to be in the Starkville area for very long I'd suggest making the trip up to Memphis, TN to see the sights there.

I would warn you that it can get colder then you think in November down here, but given that y'all are from Scandinavia I don't think you'll have much to worry about.

I'd recommend handing out blankets you've been coughing into for a week or so to the locals.

You should have gone to the SC vs GA game so you could have laughed your asses off!

Thank you very much for all the great recommendations. We have now made reservations at Tyler the day before Thanksgiving, and we will definately swing by two brothers smoked meats... we all looove wings!

Haha, yeah you're right about that

We have all visited Memphis before, but thank you anyway. We will only be in Starkville for 2 days... going to Auburn afterwards for the Iron Bowl :)

... and we will actually go to see the Razorbacks play football.... in Baton Rouge the week before.

You have my condolences then. But you will have a good time tailgating in Baton Rouge with the LSU fans.

Great call! My personal favorite is the pork chop. The duck burger is phenomenal as well if it's still on the menu.
