1. Carolina (NC)
2. Memphis
3. Texas
4. KC
Carolina and Memphis could go either way for me. Kansas City is way below the others.

Interesting. Can you elaborate? Do both generally use a vinegar-based sauce?

Hell no. Vinegar is NC. SC is mostly mustard based.

What CNB said, one is a yellow mustard based sauce, the other is a thin watery redish color vinegar

Edited OP. I will have to try SC BBQ sometime (though I may have already without realizing it).

It's my favorite, but I'm obviously biased.

Maurice's sauce is very good. Mike and Ed's in Auburn is a mustard base, I like it better though

Im not a fan of the SC mustard sauce. I ate whatever is the most famous bbq place in Columbia and didnt finish. Sauce is so overpowering.
NC BBQ FTW

If the meat is cooked correctly it doesn't need sauce.
Therefore, Memphis dry rub.
ETA: SC style is the worst. Where there's mustard there's Yankees.

Yup, it is, you will be hard pressed to find a mustard based sauce in the north
