All the white Jacksonians were in a panic when this dude was elected (he had heavy ties to some extremist/black pantheresque organizations), but from all accounts I've read he seemed to have been a pretty decent mayor.

^ This. My uncle who lives up there said the guy was actually acting pretty professional and was trying to mend fences among the "cultures" of the city. Only problem is that now the same old dumbasses like Kenneth Stokes and former mayor Harvey Johnson are still around to drag Jackson back into reverse apartheid.

I'd guess someone took issue with the beliefs he associated himself with that included black reparations and separating the majority black portions of the southeast into a new nation.
