Some people just refuse to die.

I always carry a bell to let them know I'm around, bear spray if they get too close and my Glock for last resort defense. And that's just for the black bears we have here in Kentucky. I would probably include hand grenades if I was hiking in grizzly country. I have a bear phobia.

Bad idea if you're ever in grizzly country. The bells tend to attract curious grizzly cubs, followed soon after by angry mamas.

the guy carries a pistol but refused to use it to potentially save himself from a bear attack twice? does not compute.

Yeah. I was taught ringing bells just meant humans with food in their backpacks.

Before first attack

Orr said the grizzly with two cubs came sprinting at him from 80 yards away on Saturday in the Madison Valley in southwest Montana.

After 2nd attack

quote:

The pistol and holster were lying five feet to my left. The bear's ferocious bites and pulling had ripped the straps from the pack and the holster attached to it. Now trashed, that backpack may have helped prevent many more serious bites on my back and spine.

What I do not understand is why between the first and second attack he did not move the gun from his pack to his hand?

Dude is a beast... I have yet encountered a grizzly since being here but I would probably die from pure shock the moment I saw one charge at me...

Then you should carry the effective bear response weapon

Had a bear in my tent when I was younger, it felt like this….

It might have only been seconds sniffing around but it seemed like forever. Eventually went away but I stayed awake pretty much motionless till daybreak. I wondered if snoring had brought the unwanted attention in the first place and waking up stopped the snoring, so they went away.

Damn. I've been on a lot of trails where this happened, fishing on the Madison river near Ennis (where he was taken to the hospital).

We've had several brown bear attacks here this summer, everyone survived. One of the better attributes of a brown bear attack is that they will back off if you play dead. That don't happen with black bears.

So play dead in the barrio and stay out of the PJ's.

What about white bears?

Point taken. No bells in grizzly country.

I carry my gun within easy reach when out in the woods. I can't understand why he had it in his backpack. I'm sure he learned there's not much reaction time when dealing with bears.

Yep. Lots of armed people never have a chance to shoot. A guy was attacked over the weekend here and never knew what was happening until it was too late. His partner killed the bear.

A LAW rocket would be pretty effective too I would say. It is a good idea travelling where they live to go in heavily armed groups.
