Clearly, it's not because it holds value and used a shite-ton on a daily basis in retail.
But, I'd prefer we didn't have them. In fact, I wish there was no change smaller than the quarter, because thats the only change I ever save(and generally just for future trips to the car wash).

They're used to make even change. I. E. your total comes to $5.48. You pay $6.03 to get $. 55 back. Etc.........
