I had a black coworker who was called colored by a white man to which she retorted "I'm not colored you are". The man who was visibly angered said "no I'm not". "She said look you're turning from pink to red right now and when you can't breathe you turn blue. I always look like this." That defused the situation pretty quick.

I hate the term "African American". What if they're British and just here on vacation? Has a white person ever demanded to be referred to as "European American"?

When I'm describing somebody I purposely avoid skin color. It's funny how often people will ask you their color. They can't just use the other features.

I agree "African American" is just not workable. I heard dumb asses refer to Nelson Mandela as "African American". And how should we differentiate his race from his white African contemporaries?

On a slightly different note, my pre-teen kids seem to think my use of the term "black" is no longer acceptable. They say "dark skinned". How are we white folks supposed to keep this shite straight?

Unless you are describing them to a blind man, the visual component is pretty essential. Skin and hair color is at the top of the list.

Irrelevant, these people are ignorant.

Mandela's? Non-issue: they're Africans.

White people from south Africa? Hell, they're African Americans too if they're over here. Ain't no thang. That's far less common, though.

Whether you deem it "workable" or not, it is exactly that for many black people and will continue to be.

And it's not really a huge deal, tbh. Like i said earlier, at worst, most today will use the terms interchangeably.

You just described one of my good friends. You should see the looks he gets when he says he's African American.

Yeah...it got scary one time. I was up at his work talking to him, and he had to get onto a bagger about something (he was a manager at Windixie)...anyhoo, this bagger told him "you can't talk to me that way, I'm African American." He replied with, "son, I'm more of an African American than you'll ever be." I dropped my shite and hauled arse out of there. Didn't want to stick around for the consequences

However, I did tell him the next day that it probably wasn't a good idea to say that.

Not that hard. Friends with a couple and the mother was 10 shades of dark african. She married a friend of mine who was paddy pig Irish and about a ginger as they come. Had 2 kids (I was at the hospital for 1 birth so I know at least 1 came out of her) and those kids are snowflake white.

Having a white AA friend may not be as hard as it seems.
