To their football team? Carnage, as per par
ETA: Oh, nvm, I'm a dumbass, just realized what you meant.
Someone the other day was asking where I'd experienced racism and the only place in Texas I'd ever been called the N word to my face was at the University of Texas when my little brother and I visited for a road game. Kind of left a bad taste in my mouth and my wife's.

Damn. That's fricking awful.
It just goes to show that every school has different types of people, and that most of these fans are genuinely good people, even though every school has a few assholes who ruin it for everyone else.

Damn. That's fricking awful. It's weird because I lurk on Shaggybevo just for shits and giggles (especially for the meltdowns post BYU) and they always like to claim that y'all were the racist ones. But after seeing the amount of black people at A&M (which was A LOT more than I was expecting ) and what you just told me I now know that is not the case.
They ARE more liberal in Austin, and I'm not going to sit here and pretend that A&M doesn't have its own sordid history of racial problems (hell, my dad has some stories from his time at A&M in the early 80s), but the overall atmosphere in Aggieland is a lot more accepting than people realize.
Being in an interracial relationship for the majority of my time there and having zero problems one way or the other was quite the contrast to being on the texas campus for under 3 hours and getting targeted like that. It is what it is, though, and I'm sure there's a black person somewhere that went to texas that has a similar negative story about college station.

Agree 100%

Also I know it's sad, but I'm surprised that other people from different schools in the SEC and otherwise were surprised that this was going on here. I thought that this happened pretty much everywhere, it was just never talked about. It's good to know that this isn't the Greek Status Quo.
Not surprised at all, and it does happen in at least three other southern universities, to my direct knowledge. I gather it is more common than what most people are aware.
TBird - I'm not surprised by your experience at UT, either, sorry to say. Disgusting.

jbond is absolutely right with his assessment of how non-greeks perceive the Greek system at UA. I was a white, non-greek at UA in the 90's and the racism within the Greek system was pretty obvious, and most of the GDI's realized that. It is why I dropped out of rush my freshman year.
That's not to say every greek was racist. Many I knew and still know are absolutely not racist. The overall system, however, is.

quote:So what
I just talked to someone involved in Greek life at Alabama and this was confirmed. Zero blacks in any fraternities or sororities there and it is not because black people opt out. It is a systemically forbidden and enforced with threat of punishment.
Here is the deal. U of A is controlled by the Greek system via the Machine which differentiates it from other schools.
U of A knows of what amounts to systemic racism that controls campus life.
U of A has not done anything about it but rather, encourages it.
Therefore, the University of Alabama is a racist institution not through voluntary association but through policy.
How am I wrong?
And, why would a single black person want to go to school there until this issue was addressed?

What the hell are you talking about, jbond?
I am not greek, and haven't been a student since the mid 90's. And I clearly stated that there is a problem with racism in greek culture. And I mean all across the southeast.
It is one of the very few places in our society where racism is still tolerated.

Really? That is a pretty strong statement.
Why is that?
Why is this stupid?

The Machine is overrated. What do they do besides rig elections that no one outside of the greek system cares about?
...Cason Kirby's recent election to the city board of education via Machine connections was certainly something worth caring about.
Not to mention Lee Garrison's city council election about 10 years ago.
Folks that aren't from Tuscaloosa don't realize it but these roots run deep and control a lot about the entire city.
Also, was greek at UA (Phi Gam) and still live in Tuscaloosa. The greek system at UA, especially sorority rush, is institutionally racist.

I think that everyone knows that Greek life throughout the South is socially racist in that people choose to affiliate with people like them instead of building relationships with those who are different. But, now the cover is pulled back and we see that these are the rules and even if the girls try to change them, they are not allowed to by those who are in charge.
That is a much worse problem than I ever thought it was. It is pretty messed up and if the University of Alabama allows it to continue now that we know it is out there, I think that is really bad for U of A.
Posted on 9/16/13 at 1:27 pm to AlaTiger
Quite frankly, I'm more surprised that people did not know this is "the norm" at many schools, and in my experience, no one tried to change it. It was made clear, that is just how things were, no matter how antiquated and backward that way of thinking is.

Racist and elitist. Keep the rich girls from meeting the riff raff. So Magnolia sweetmeat can meet the future attorneys of the area.

All SEC Fraternites and Sororities are for the most part segregated besided maybe a token black guy. Although they have the same organizations that are all black and do not allow whites.
Seperate but equal.
Seperate but equal.

I do believe all of the black fraternities and sororities at Bama have accepted white members in the past.

Ole times are not forgotten. Wont change as lonf as racists run society there or until it effects football. Let Saban lose a recruit because of this and things will change,. Just like when the Bear needed Bama integrated.
