How to make really good coffee

I've been having trouble making a good cup of coffee. I use a French press, and typically the coffee tastes better than a cheap drip maker, but not as good as a good–high end drip maker.
At first I thought it was because I used a blade grinder for my beans, but I just switched to a bur grinder and the brew is still mediocre.
Anyone have tips? I let the water steep for 3–4 minutes; I've tried different ranges of water temperature; and I've tried adding a pinch of salt

From someone in the food and beverage industry, this was the story relayed to me...
When Starbucks was first starting up they got the worst coffee beans from South America basically for free because the dope dealers were using it to pack with the dope shipments so the sniffer dogs could not detect them. They resold the beans at near free prices so Starbucks bought them. If you want a good cup of coffee get one at Starbucks so you know what really bad is and what it should not taste like.
If you want a simple solution and live near a Tim Hortons go there. If not and all you have is the local McDonalds that is better than Starbucks and cheaper.
If you want the real solution the key is the roasting of the beans. This guy was in some village near where the coffee is grown and the lady who made his coffee let him watch. Granted she had fresh beans but asked how he liked his coffee and she threw them in the oven and roasted them accordingly. She then ground the beans is a grinder that was old and had to be cranked by hand as it looked to be made before electricity. Put the ground beans in a pot and brewed the best cup this guy ever had. I do not drink coffee often but took his word.
Step #1 : Get beans you like as fresh as you can
Step #2 : Roast quantity for the coffee you intend to make (cup or pot)
Step #3 : Grind just that quantity
Step #4 : Brew coffee
Step #5 : Enjoy said coffee as is (no fake additives or premixed syrups)

Go to Sweet Maria’s web site. It will tell you everything you need to know about coffee.
I buy my green beans there and is where I bought my toaster.
I promise you will be able to enjoy the best tasting coffee you ever drank.

When you plunge down the French press, do it very slowly. It should take you 60 seconds to get all the way down.
Also make sure you aren’t skimping on the grounds.
Finally, coffee is 99.99999999% water. Have you considered your water might suck?

aeropress is the best I've had. It is what a french press wishes it was. Also I only let it soak for 1 min before straining and usually try to get my water at 180F-200F. So much better than any cup you can buy.

I would add that a cup of coffee is mostly water. Use crappy tap water with chlorine in it and you will definitely have crappy coffee.

Step #2 Have her make the coffee
Step #3 Have her serve it in bed
