Thank God for HOPE. GA has one of the better scholarship setups in the SEC. I paid nothing for tuition and got a little $ for books also. Some states have lower capped amounts so the student still ends up footing some of the bill. Other states don't have HOPE or a HOPE equivalent at all. Sucks to be them.
Yeah, LIFE gave me $5,000 a year. While I am very grateful for that money, that isn't nearly as beneficial as it was 10 years ago when the education lottery scholarships got started. Tuition at South Carolina my senior year in 2010-2011 was around $9,000 I think. Once you add in housing and books, loans become a necessity since part time jobs only help a little.

My parents pod for my education back in 1990 when I graduated. But my wife went back to school after we got married. Was 80k. Still owe 20k. Low interest. I refuse to pay it off early.

Hope isn't what it once was. I'm 3 years in now and still thankfully debt free, but after books, fees, and my part of tuition I pay in almost as much as Hope does. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for the help. I just wish I could have hit college about 6 years ago.

I consider myself pretty lucky in that my parents paid for my school.

the college i went to gave some good scholarships out. i applied as a freshman for an academic scholarship with a 96 GPA. One weird thing was they asked for my parents salary. what the frick do you need that for? they're not paying for it.
proceeded not to get the scholarship while several classmates w/ lower GPAs than me did. i emancipated myself a few years later and what do you know? free ride!

I don't think it's weird that they asked for your parents' salary. Ideally there should be both merit and need based scholarships available to apply for. College isn't getting any cheaper and I think it's a shame that some can't attend good schools because of cost. Cost is what kept me from applying to more prestigious non-state schools.

i agree to an extent. but what can i do on paper other than emancipate myself from my parents to prove to them i'm a need based case? it didn't matter if my parents are millionaires or paupers. they kicked me out (on somewhat good terms) at 19 said fend for yourself kiddo.

I think when filling out the FAFSA there's a question about filing as a independent or a dependent and that's where you would differentiate yourself from someone whose parents are financially supportive. I could be wrong though because I never filled out the thing being lucky enough to get the scholly I needed.
Another problem that I think stinks is scholarship stacking. I know several people that in addition to full tuition, housing, and miscellaneous expenses, they receive fat checks from the University each semester because they have kick-arse resumes and win every scholarship they apply for so they're making significant money they're banking that another kid could have used for books or something. And I'm talking they're making more than just cost of living stuff from the school. For example, I know one person who has a full ride with housing and everything covered, and receives a $4000 check from the school each semester. Not all schools allow that but Bama does.
