Greatest Songwriters of the last 20 yrs...Drive-By Truckers & Jason Isbell

To me, they are the best group of songwriters since the Beatles. Isbell is/was the Harrison of the group > too many great songs to get 3rd billing. Isbell is a superior singer and guitarist than Cooley & Hood, but those two are on McCartney/Lennon level as songwriters. Each song gets better every time I hear it. If you aren't into music that's about real life, they aren't for you. Thoughts?

My moms favorite movie is Pure Country. I kinda like it too, but just for the music . Couple great songs on there

Check out James McMurtry... Larry McMurtry's (Lonesome Dove) son

I like the movie too. I like his songs but he jokes about having never written any or almost none of his songs. Thought I'd throw his name into this thread.

DBT are fantastic song/lyric writers. My favorite songwriter of the last 20 years is Cory Branan, though. He can't be beat, IMO.
Listen to this song - "Survivor Blues"
Another really great songwriter is Austin Lucas.
Austin Lucas - "Go West"
Also, Lucero is far and away my favorite band ever and Ben Nichols is the master of lyrics so simple and true that they hurt you. Just awesome.

George has more than his share of fans. I just don't think he's on the same level as the Highwaymen when it comes to classic country

Chris Stapleton. He's written songs fir Tim McGraw, Josh Turner, Luke Bryan, and a bunch of others that I can't remember. He's an even better singer than any of them. The only reason he isn't a household name is that he gives zero fricks about his appearance, which is a must in today's "country" music market.

Didn't sign on here to talk music; had to start somewhere, but as it turns out, I'd much rather get introduced to good bands/artists than the bickering piss contest that is the secrant

Stick to the OTB. It gets a little troll-y at times , but it's a million times better than tRant.

It's all leather shirts/cowboy hats now. Cooley has a great line from an interview when asked about Montgomery gentry: "I hate it. They need to turn their cleché radar on. Merle Haggard is still writing great songs." I can't stand the college gameday intro w whatever that terrible band that is

Juicy J is the only right answer

They're overblown and kind of suck.
