I agree with the Vol. Get a dog and use the money on a vacation.

Between the rising cost of things like engagement rings and just wedding costs in general, it makes a ring that can be upgraded later and eloping very very tempting
Yep.
We both have student loans we're paying off and we're trying to save for a down payment on a house. Spending several thousand for a ring and wedding just aren't in the cards if we want to meet our financial goals.
We will probably elope and then have a party at her parents' house for friends and family to attend.

I will be getting married at the courthouse in jeans and a cut off t-shirt, just to save money on a stupid wedding.

Final update for this thread. Got the ring in the mail about 3 weeks after ordering it (got it from James Allen online). It came in a nice package with its diamond certificate. It's very nice quality, looks just like it did on the website. The .46 carat diamond is perfect. Big enough to grab your attention but not over the top; modest and elegant. Don't let anyone tell you you need a .75 or 1 carat diamond. You can in fact get a very nice engagement ring for under $2k. Thanks to all who provided advice. I proposed and she said yes.

One more thing, if you order from James Allen, have it shipped to a location that's not your home if you live with your girlfriend. James Allen does not allow the recipient to tell Fedex to hold the package at a FedEx location.

Let this thread be a learning experience for you.
Once you are married, you will have this discussion over and over again.
You will ask "Why do I have to pay so much for X?"
X = a house in the right neighborhood, a private school, a new car for her, thousands of dollars in clothes she will never wear, your kids sports travel and activities, etc.
The key is to have your wife work to pay for all the extras herself. It's amazing how much more careful we spend when it's our own money. (Looking at you government)
I have avoid 99% of the chaos above by choosing a frugal wife who works just as hard as me.
Hope you are doing the same.

Congrats on the engagement. Hopefully your wedding planning won't be as painful as mine has been thus far

When I was looking for an engagement ring, staying within budget was super important. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the options and pushed by flashy sales pitches, but honestly, I just wanted something beautiful that I knew my partner would love, without draining my savings. After a bunch of online research, I realized there are actually a ton of ways to find stylish rings at lower prices, especially if you go for lab-grown diamonds or keep an eye out for sales. I found browsing sites with a focus on affordable engagement rings way less stressful than heading to local jewelry stores. The designs were unique, customization was easy, and I didn’t feel pressured by anyone. It might be worth a look if budget’s a concern but you still want something really nice.
