Are you a psychopath?

Hare Psychopathy Checklist

The Hare Psychopathy checklist is used by some professionals to determine the risks some criminals pose to society but I thought we could have some fun with it on the OTB.

Score your friends and loved ones and let us know if you’re in the midst of a bunch of psychos or if you’re the one getting strange looks at family gatherings.

Below are traits of psychopaths. Score 0 for not present in the subject, 1 for somewhat and 2 for definitely. The twenty traits on the Hare Psychopathy checklist are:

1. pathological lying
2. glib and superficial charm
3. grandiose sense of self
4. need for stimulation
5. cunning and manipulative
6. lack of remorse or guilt
7. shallow emotional response
8. callousness and lack of empathy
9. parasitic lifestyle
10. poor behavioral controls
11. sexual promiscuity
12. early behavior problems
13. lack of realistic long-term goals
14. impulsivity
15. irresponsibility
16. failure to accept responsibility
17. many short-term marital relationships
18. juvenile delinquency
19. revocation of conditional release
20. criminal versatility

Score key:

0 = most people
1-30 (1-25 in the UK) = not psychopathic but can manifest social problems
30-40 = have probably hurt someone. To be feared.

I scored a 3 on the test. I’m not exactly a pussycat but I do meow a lot apparently.

Sounds like fun. Can you define the last two terms for me?

I don't believe that. Anybody who claims to score zero isn't being honest with themselves.

Is that like when a parole officer violates you and you gotta go back to prison?

Yea especially on “Need for stimulation”, everyone should score at least a one.

Also, aren’t irresponsibility and lack of accepting responsibility kind of the same thing.

Bowl Jackson. Though I don’t know him. He fits all the traits.

I have a friend I’ve been wondering about for a while now. He’s very high functioning if he is a psychopath. I’ve definitely been approaching with caution.

I just scored someone who I used to be friends with a long time ago and he easily got a 32... hasn't done anything criminal and hasn't been married, but is a definite 2 for everything else

True story, my wife and I went through the process of adopting two boys ages 8 and 9 and the 8 year old had about 16 of these 20 traits. Needless to say, it didn't work out. It was scary in the end, I locked the door and slept fitfully most nights.

Yay Baybee! I am not a psychopath. Unless we are in the UK. Otherwise my 29 lets me limbo under the threshold!

I shall allow everyone to bow before my superior mental health now.

19. revocation of conditional release - parole violation

20. criminal versatility - has no pattern in his crimes. This shows the usual highintellect of psychopaths.

I had to research this. “At the expense of others” needs ro be added for a clearer understanding of the trait.

Think of irresponsibility as the trait of not feeling accountable for your actions.

Not accepting responsibility would be like taking a job and not doing it or getting married and not contributing to the marriage or caring for the kids.

Adult psychopaths can be very hard to spot. They can be very intelligent and can adapt to most environments.

Sadly, after taking into account factors like stimulation (at the expense of others), my score dropped low enough I'm not even a psychopath in the UK anymore. I suspect my ADHD mimics certain characteristics of psychopathy which nudges my overall score up.

Ah well. I can rest easy in the knowledge at least I'm a masochist since I cheer on Arkansas in sports.

Juvenile psychopaths can be more dangerous than adults because they haven’t yet learned to disguise themselves. They don’t presume consequences for their actions. They just want what they want and proceed towards getting it, no matter if they have to hurt someone in the process. The most obvious of adult psychopaths are of the same mind, and commit crimes regularly.
